I saw it again, I still don't like it...
I don't see what's to like. :(
I've never been much of a sci-fi fan however, unless you count the old Starwars and Spaceballs. ;) I tend to gravitate to movies more like Apocalypse Now, Donnie Darko, Zelig, Grosse Point Blank, Primer, Full Metal Jacket, and yes, even War of the Worlds.
Therefore, I do not see why people like this movie  .

...... then don't hurt yourself straining your brain, Door. Each to their own, live & let live, one man's poison is another man's bread ...... get the picture? :p
BTW: Grosse Point Blank is one of my alltime faves, too. Wish they'd do a sequel.

Dia,

The more I watch and think about Serenity, the less I like it. :(
Without that western theme and cool smuggling jobs what distinguishes Serenity from other Sci-fi's? What I liked about the show is how unforced the western theme felt. It didn't feel like people just decided to act like cowboys, it was because they had less money and so they created their own culture using examples from the past. And the smuggling jobs were to show that the crew were obviously criminals, but they never did a unjust job. Fighting the system :D . But none of this was in Serenity, making for a decent Sci-fi, but nothing more.
I still like the movie, but I'll admit it could have been way better.
Psst...
Where was the Blue Sun?
Did you sleep through the whole movie?

OMG! Did I say that out loud?? (I'm trying to emulate StD & Stitch.....how'm I doin'?) :cheeky:
Honestly, though, I cannot stand narrow minded people who try to force their views down other people's throats! So he didn't like the movie, so what - it's his right! But don't imply that the rest of us are morons for liking it (or I'll kick your butt!). Taffer36 gave a good example of why he wasn't crazy 'bout the movie, but he didn't try to make anyone who liked it feel like they were assholes for doing so.
Guess I really do have a mean-streak afterall! Ok, well, the beginnings of one, maybe ..... ;)

Don't worry Dia, JACKofTrades was merely criticizing my points that I made. If I didn't want criticism then I wouldn't have posted (I stated that wrong... not that I love arguments, but I don't mind when other people question what I say).
My point was that I still like the movie, but I still think it could have been better. The "jobs" that the crew in Serenity had just didn't match up in my eyes to the great ones in Firefly. The opening "bank job" (or whatever they were stealing from, wasn't it the money they received from Parliment or something?) just didn't catch my interest. The crew only pulls guns when they need to (which was constant in the series) but in the movie they use mere force to steal. Bringing me back to what I said earlier: Unjust illegal jobs? Yes that was one.
I still like the movie, I just thought they had nothing to really distinguish them from all other Sci-fi's.

I could have read too much into Jack's post, I'll admit. I do agree with you, though, Taffer; the movie could have been so much more. As I said before (at least I think I did), it looked to me as though J. Whedon got Serenity out of his system (from the special feature interviews on the series disks) in creating the movie. The cast is signed up to do two more movies, which makes me kinda wonder how Whedon's gonna handle (or mishandle) that. I'm gonna be optimistic & hope for the best. Especially:
is he gonna replace Wash with River as Serenity's main pilot or get a new one?
One thing that DID disappoint me was that Whedon
never really explained Book's mysterious background. Remember all the cryptic remarks Book made in the series & the things he did that made you believe he had some serious connections? In the movie, Book just answer's Mal's question re: Book's past with something like, "....and you never will (know)." Later, Book dies, so I guess we'll never know, either.
RE: "Kick your butt!" Vertically challenged people are notoriously feisty & somewhat high-spirited. Enthusiasts, if you will. :cheeky: ;)

if l remember correctly, the scene between book and mal went something like
MAL- 'one of these days you have to tell me how you know so much about these things.'
BOOK- 'no l don't.'
btw, l hope l'm not the only one utterly floored by ron glass's voice. smooth as good brandy but with bourbon kick lurking under the surface. the man just conveyed power.
