Just finished watching it, and it was pretty damn excellent. Certainly a fitting conclusion to the series. And the spoilered part really hit me hard. If I hadn't been surrounded by a bunch of manly men and the tension hadn't been so high at that point, I might've even bawled.
I think newcomers would still appreciate that Wash and Zoe were married and they had both been part of the crew for a long time, so it would still be far from a Red Shirt moment for them.
They probably wouldn't appreciate the importance of the dynamic betweren those two characters, however (as there simply wasn't much screen time for it), where as anyone who had watched Firefly would understand what an enormous loss it was, both for the characters and for the show.
I haven't had such a kick-in-the-teeth moment watching a movie for a long time.
I watched the series before the movie, all I can say is BULLSHIT!
It had the potenial to be great, but the typical weadon cheese fucked it all up.
The movie played like feature length episode. Full of the "Yeah like wow!" childish humour that plgued the serie(in in bufffy and Angel as well)
One thing I noticed ws the CGI reminded me a lot of Babylon 5. Either they copied the zoom in thing or the same team worked on it.

I totally agree, Shadowcat. Both my husband & I hardly paid attention to the next 5 minutes of the movie because we were both so stunned! DEFINITELY NOT HAPPY about that part! :nono: We think that was Whedon's way of saying, "That's it......I've gotten Serenity out of my system..........all done."
Sad day indeed. :(

If I were a betting man, I'd say the sequel to “Serenity” will most likely be direct-to-DVD. But, if I were a man of faith, I'd also be collapsing on my knees, bringing the hands together and praying to the high heavens that we get (at least) one more cinema excursion of the crew.
Whatever-will-be-will-be I guess - and as Whedon says, nothing will be decided until the monkeys tally up the returns from the forthcoming “Serenity” DVD - but regardless, Whedon has some ideas for the sequel.
Though he didn't go into specifics, Whedon tells moviesonline.ca that there's a couple of characters he'd like to revisit : Jubal Early, the bounty hunter in the final episode of “Firefly”, and Shepherd Book, who only had a small part in “Serenity”.
Whedon says that Early's still around (“I know he survived”) and that he's keen to use the character again because “I love that character”.
He says he might also “one day tell” Book's back-story.
So is the big man disappointed that “Serenity” didn't set alight the box office? “It wasn't a horrible bomb. Yes it did struggle. It's a question of how do you market a film that doesn't have any stars. Or a film that's just not one thing, that is generally diverse. Ultimately, I'm enormously surprised that people came out and saw it. That's what matters”.
the other possibility, mentioned in a previous article, is a series of flicks on the sci-fi channel. the 'serenity'[1] dvd will be out in about 2 weeks, by the way. depending on what's on it l may actually buy the damn thing.

***SPOILERS BITCHES***
Book's backstory would be kind of a letdown now that Book won't actually have any hand in revealing it. Also it'd be kind of stiffing Ron Glass to make an entire movie about his character that he can't appear in (at least not without heavy use of flashbacks or Jedi mind tricks).

I caught a couple of episodes, but I was pretty fucking drunk!
However, this was a great movie, which had a tenure on realism that most action / adventure films lack. And when I say realism, I'm comparing this film to shit like Catwoman, and making the point that people die, things are constantly breaking and you get lines like this:
"YOU WANNA RUN THIS SHIP?"
"YES!"
"Well... uh... you.. can't."
Damn shame Firefly got cancelled.

Serenity gets released on DVD (here in the US, at least) Dec. 20th. I didn't get a chance to see it more than once in the theater, so you better believe I'll be one of the first in line to buy the DVD. I'm almost dreading watching it again, tho, 'cuz
of the deaths of Wash & Book.
I figure I'll have to watch it four or five times before I can get beyond that so I can focus on the remainder of the movie. I've already bought a value-pack of tissues. :(
BTW: did anyone catch Alan Tudyk's performance as Wat in A Knight's Tale? Though the movie was a tad formulaic, the repartee between Tudyk & Paul Bettany (as Chaucer) was priceless! Both actors are mega-talented!!

Yup, I will admit to watching a Knight's Tale. I'd rate Paul Bettany over Tudyk though.

Bought & watched Serenity last night........ loved it just as much as the first time (in the theater). Still can't
get past Wash's death yet...:(
Guess I'll have to watch it a few more times before I can focus on the rest of the movie after that point. I'd better buy some stock in tissue.
Once again, I was totally blown away by Summer Glau's performance! That young lady positively OOZES talent!
....I'm beginning to have a love/hate relationship with Joss Whedon.........
