Well, I take this occasion to ask, then: I have the DVDs but contrary to what I thought when I bought them, there are no French audio/sub on them. Could anyone with the Canadian DVD set rip the French audio in mp3 and send it over? Me and my sis can get the english dialogue alright, but now I want to show Firefly to my parents, they would need it translated.
I'm aware it's slightly in the "not allowed" category, but well, if both parties have legitimate copies, I don't see what's wrong with that...
Anyway, I'd be grateful if someone did that :)

Alright, apparently this thread is 30 days old, but I decided I have a rather entertaining story regarding this movie.
Me and this girl [who was haaawwtt] went to see it on our first date, because the director supposedly directed one of her favourite shows, which I now know was incorrect. I thought the director was someone else. So basically it was my choice to see this movie, which I REALLY regret. So we go there and just before we enter the theatre I say, "I really hope this isn't like Star Treck or anything." She giggles all is good. So we start watching the movie, and it is kinda like Star Treck, neither of us could pay attention [which we don't find out until afterwards], but we didn't know if the other person is into the movie so we don't talk to much, the odd comment here and there about how dumb the show is  . I kind of zoned out for about an hour of the show. Anyways, later after it I felt really bad, because obviously the movie was a date crasher, I should had let HER pick the movie, which is what I do now with all women, because at least if the shows bad you can say "well you picked it ;) " So worse comes to worse were not seeing eachother anymore after about a month of going out, and I blame the movie partially. Theres a special place in hell for this movie.

I liked it. Sorry to hear it didn't do so well as they'd hoped.
I loved the TV show, thought the movie seemed much like an extended episode, but a little too action-oriented -- I felt the characters got slightly lost in amongst all the action.
I do appreciate that Joss was trying to appeal to a fairly diverse audience, however.
All in all, plenty of good stuff there. I prefer the TV show, but I'm glad I got to see the movie on the big screen.

Not any more! :thumb: Anyway, you shouldn't be ashamed of your home. It's not like you come from Stockton-on-Tees.
I quite liked the movie too. I loved the series, with very few reservations. I always enjoyed sci-fi as a kid, but Firefly is the only sci-fi TV show I've liked for many, many years. I thought it was excellent, Out Of Gas being my favourite episode. The film didn't quite live up in all ways, but at its heights was a good and fitting continuation/end to the story. It seemed to me that the characters were mostly treated much more lightly than in the series; I guess anyone who'd watched ~10 hours is bound to say that. But underneath all the flaws (which I think were minor) was a very good story and the same kind of humanity present in the series but absent from most sci-fi. Interesting villain too.
Really doon't read this if you haven't seen the film:
For Firefly fans - when Wash died, I suddenly got the feeling (other than NO THAT CAN'T HAPPEN) that he hadn't really been prominent enough before that point for new audiences to really understand his character and sympathise fully - obviously it had a great effect on me, but I couldn't help feeling that newcomers might have regarded him as "the dead meat guy," a red shirt or whatever. Those that I saw the film with said that wasn't the case, so I understand my view is skewed by having seen the series - just because I had much more background doesn't mean they didn't have enough. Did anyone else get that feeling, or just me?
I still had doubts until it actually happened, but I saw the Shepherd's death coming. Wash, on the ohter hand, was totally unexpected. Even though I was in the cinema, I still had the old series formula stuck in my head, so when such an integral character bit the dust I was knocked sideways. This made the following last-stand scene all the more tense, when every character except Inara took a hit - after having seen two major characters get rubbed out, I really thought any one of them, even Mal, could kick the bucket. A sad and incredibly effective turn of events.
Yea, I don't know, perhaps I would have liked it better if I wasn't on a date, mabey I'll give it another go sometime since so many people seem to like it.

Yes, you'll probably be able to concentrate better on a nice, quiet evening in with a DVD, rather than spending the entire two hours thinking about Hide The Sausage.

I'm right with you, piln.
The emotional impact was heavy for fans, but I don't think the audience would have felt much of it. My old man watched the series after the movie, and the more he watched it, the sadder he got, knowing that Wash dies.
