serenity made about 3.2 million this weekend, bringing its total to about 22 million. these may be domestic figures only. it's worth noting that serenity has dropped from almost 2300 theatres to about 1700. on the bad side this means that it has been dropped from about 1/4 of its initial screens; on the good side it managed to eke out a somewhat respectable return [relatively] with fewer theatres. at a guess l'd give it another 3 weeks before it is banished to the cheap theatres. 'doom' and 'goblet of fire' will weed out a lot of underperforming films.
regarding box office grosses and profitability, here's an anecdote that might help to put studio accounting into perspective-
when tom hanks signed on to do 'forrest gump', he accepted a reduced paycheck in exchange for 20 pct. of the gross. he was pretty hot at the time and his salary would have broken the budget for the film. 'gump' was a huge hit and one of the highest-grossing films ever and hanks ended up with about 60 million in his pocket, give or take. winston groom, who adapted his own novel for the screen, was paid 500k plus a small percentage of the net. even though the film grossed over 300 million on a 50-odd million dollar budget, groom never received his points because according to studio accountants the movie actually LOST money.
this is one of the reasons why actors demand so much upfront, by the way; they know that the studio will fuck them over if it there is even an unproven mathematical theorem that will allow them to cook the numbers. the studio number-crunchers are so sly they make disaster area's accountant look like a retard and so unethical they'd make even steve ballmer wince.

Apparently all those industry accounts of studios shitcanning sequel options to box office bombs are wrong, then?
Hollywood really needs to read this thread and get their shit straight!

Ok. Saw it. Beter than the soap version of it (especialy because the awful intro song/thing was NOT present). Not great - but quite nice. (thank god they avoided their ships "engine" area)

This movie is so good I was on the verge of tears in the end. Practically living onboard Serenity in the last four to five days didn't help, I really cared for the crew, confident that no matter what they'd do okay.
I somewhat regret being so enthusiastic about Star Wars a few months ago. It feels as if I blew all my cartridges and I've run out of ammo for this one. This is a damn fine movie, and sums up pretty much what every sci-fi flick should ever be. I tought SW was sad, but Serenity brought that notion to a whole new level. And Summer Glau (River) is right when she describes the movie as intense. It really is. Thinking about it, I didn't feel so emotionnally affected since I watched Closer. I left the theater wondering what the hell had happened, and still in a state of denial concerning... well, that thing. Kicked in the guts, again. Talk about empathy... ;)
I'm not sure about a possible sequel. I heard the actors signed up for a trilogy, and as much as I love Serenity and her crew, I'm not certain it's a good idea. Regardless, the movie brings an end to the series as I know it, that's for sure.
I went straight to the theater again the day after, and paying full price two days in a row isn't something I remember I ever did before.

[edit] For what it's worth, I would recommend watching the series first if possible. Makes the movie quite more powerful in my opinion.

You know, as much as I loved the movie and the series, I have to admit it. This movie is a conclusion. It's a wrap-up if you will, a way for Joss Whedon to say, "Great! A second chance, but just incase I can't do anymore, I better find a good conclusion to the series.", and that's what he does. This makes it feel more like a simple treat to the long-time fans than a movie for anybody. That said, the plot could have been better. It wasn't a bad storyline, but I do believe that it took some blows because it was made to be an ending. They could have done so much more if they had chosen something else. Especially if they had chosen to screw the conclusion and follow the Blue Sun corporation instead.
Regardless, it was a good movie.

 as i have never heard of the tv series, this was a new thing for me and I liked it reasonably. Lightweight. not overdone with buffylike rumble had some pschologiy in it, nice special effects... All in all in five point scale a weak 4.
Sorry aboot the gravediging...;)
