Define box office failure smart-ass
Serenity.
Look, dude, I don't really know what you're trying to accomplish here. I've been purposefully keeping my words vague because I will openly admit to not being an expert on these matters. However, I do generally pay attention to what's going on in Hollywood and what movies are considered successes (War of the Worlds, for example) and what movies are considered failures (The Island). I think it's faily safe to say that a movie that only makes back half its budget at the box office is considered to be box office failure.
Shit, most movies that make back their budget at the box office are considered failures by the industry. Mid-sized films like Serenity are cut a bit more slack but I'd still be surprised if we see a theater-release sequel.

Jesus christ you guys are fucking zealots. You know what the best way to get people to see a movie you want supported? Act smug and superior and throw hostility at anyone who disagrees with you. You fucking morons.
Let it go. No one here knows how the fuck Universal does business.
I encourage people to see the movie because it's a cool movie and I'd like to see it do better. I can nearly ensure you you won't have to actually talk to any of these self-righteous fucksticks at the theatre.

Argh! Another argument? I preferred the one about the movie itself. This thread is about Serenity. Argue about the film's content, not about how well it's doing. For all of those people out there who didn't like the film, rather than just going in circles arguing with "Whedonites", post your reasons. This is why I don't classify myself with super Whedon fans. If anyone's been here,
leesmovieinfo.com
...then you'll know of this. Lee gave Serenity a D+, and immediately started getting vulgar hatemail. Whedonites (obsessive Whedon followers) hadn't even seen the film, and even without any knowledge of the movie lashed out at Lee. I didn't agree with his review, but everyone else went insane.
So, what did you find was well done in the movie, what did you think wasn't? I personally thought they could have explained Mal's past more in depth. And,
I'm not sure if this should be a spoiler, but the Reavers felt really corny. Their storyline wasn't that bad, but they looked cheesy.
l could never understand how a bunch of raging, raving, psychotic psycopaths [wanted to cover all the bases] could keep from killing each other long before they ever came across anybody else. also, if they are that pissed off all the time how can they perform such complex tasks as flying a spaceship? l can barely keep from smashing my computer into scrap when windows bogs down for no reason, or when l get smoked for the dozenth time in a row in a [game]battle l should have won. l can't imagine trying to plot a reentry if l was chronically beserk.

I'm still trying to figure out how I got sucked into debating the likelihood of a sequel to a movie I care nothing about.

Whaat?! Browncoats aren't psychot... oh reavers.
Oh, uhh...
Maybe it's the thought that once you get down there the raping and murdering will be totally hilarious! And nobody said they'd be stupid. :)
Hell, in the series
they left boopy traps behind on ships they'd raided in hopes of catching even more prey.
The theaters takes a lot of the box office money, so they will have to make about $80 million to cover the production costs.
To the best of my knowledge, all money made at the box office on opening weekend goes straight to Hollywood; we (at least at AMC) get nothing. After that, we get an small percentage. I'll ask my managers for specifics, if anyone cares.

If I had thought about it before reading your post, I believe I would have arrived at the conclusion that
Reavers are smart, brutal killers/rapers/cannibals.
What keeps a normal murderer from killing everyone on the street? Or other murderers, for that matter.
The plotline, as best I remember, said something about the Reavers made them highly aggressive; nowhere did it say it they lost all intelligence. Tried to say that without needing spoilers.
Aggressive != Angry. Are boxers angry at their opposition? I'd say no, but they have to be aggressive to win. Please, in all sincerity, quote me the line where it says they became angry. My mind reports it went "
In 1/10 of 1%, it had the opposite reaction. It increased their aggressiveness ... I don't know why they don't fight each other, except that it's entirely possible they *do*, at least as much as we do, but given their strength/aggressiveness such fights don't amount to much.
Agent Monkeysee on 14/10/2005 at 22:08
The best explanation is reavers are kinda orky.
oudeis on 14/10/2005 at 22:29
bum-bum-ba-bump *snap snap*
well you might think they're dorky
or even somewhat porky
they're actually quite orky
the reaver family
they're totally ballistic
unthinkingly sadistic
got beatdown by a mystic
the reaver family
*snap snap*

SHOW me movies that make it into the black at the box office, they are very few and far between. The business model for the Hollywood studios is not about box office money. Serenity will get its DVD and a decision will only be made after the DVD sales.
