I don't really care either way. I have no particular investment in continuing Firefly's storyline and I think the movie was a decent enough resolution to the biggest threads left open by the series' cancellation. Given how the movie ended, any continuation of the storyline would have to deal with the fact that the Alliance basically lost its legitimacy to rule. It'd change the face of the whole show.
But one thing I wonder is why Whedon didn't simply stay with the WB. They seemed to shepherd Buffy well enough and because they're one of the red-headed stepchild networks anyway they wouldn't be quite so quick to drop a show that wasn't putting them in every #1 spot of the week.
And I don't know how it is in the industry but among Internet TV nerds like me Fox has the absolute worst reputation of all the major networks for fucking with and then dropping shows. Just look what happened to Futurama, and this was from the guy that put Fox on the goddamn map.

There's no doubt Serenity will pick up some extra money globally and eventually through DVD sales, but that's irrelevant to studios contemplating whether or not greenlighting a sequel makes financial sense. Movies have to make money at the box office to justify another round.
With the kind of numbers Serenity is pulling Whenon will be lucky to be offered a direct-to-video sequel at half the budget.
Which is kind of sad, really, especially when you look at the utter crap that's outselling Serenity.
not quite true- 'pitch black' did only ok at the box office but did well enough on dvd to get a sequel. of course, vin diesel's imbecilic star trip [money, ego, rewrites, etc] did a pretty good job of fucking
that gravy-train sideways.
as of this writing, serenity has made roughly 20 million, or about 2/3 of its budget. given the number of theatres is it is in and the deep-horizon genre nature of the movie it's not doing too badly. it could- and should  - be doing better, considering its rating on rotten tomatoes, but it's not a total flop. when you calculate foreign box office, potential dvd sales/rentals, broadcast rights, etc, l would suspect that serenity will turn in a decent profit. not a 'renege of teh shit' blockbuster by any means, but maybe enough to get a sequel or a revived tv series.

Yeah sorry, I'll make a note to feel sorry for CGI on my calendar under "Flying pigs are real"
You realize that ALL fictional deaths are fictional, don't you?
Find a point that actually means something for a change. Thus far your criticisms could be leveled at any movie ever.

David is confusing me.
I can understand if you say, "I didn't like the film", or, "it was crap!" But if you can't feel sorry for 30 million people who were killed, then what would you feel sorry for (fictionally speaking of course). Would any other film out there with people dying, who aren't real or based on real people, make you feel sorry for them?
How can anybody find Episode 3 better than this? How can anybody find Episode 3 better than anything?! It was quite possibly the worst movie I have ever seen (exluding episodes 1 and 2). The ONLY upside was that Jar Jar had no talking in the entire movie. Yoda can tell that Anakin is having some lame wussie emotions but can't tell that there is an evil plot to kill the jedis involving over a million troopers and every single senate member?!! Yoda is no prophet...

I've yet to even see the trailer for this flick, but the sheer fanatacism and bristling hostility of its advocates is putting me right off.

Ignore the retards. It's a fun movie.
edit: and what the hell, you're on the Internet. EVERYTHING is sheer fanatacism and bristling hostility.

Ooh! Ooh! Firefly movie! I love the TV-series, and am really looking forward to see the movie made of it.
The thing I really liked about the TV-series was the surprising humour. Some things you couldn't predict in any way, and when they happend, you just burst in laughter.
But I'd like to ask you who have seen this new movie, does it have this kind of humour in it?
Agent Monkeysee on 12/10/2005 at 22:58
Yes.
I hate you character limit.
godismygoldfish on 12/10/2005 at 22:58
Yes, it is very much present.

I may have contributed to this thread already, can't remember, so fuck it. I've never seen an ep of Firefly in my life. Saw Serenity this past weekend and really enjoyed it. I wouldn't consider it a life-changing experience, but I sure as fuck got more out of it than most of the movies I've seen this year.
And another point of interest, true story albeit anecdotal: I stopped in at the CD/DVD store in my little town mall today, looking for the Firefly series DVD. The manager just about laughed at me. Turns out they've been sold out since just after the movie opened, and he figures about three weeks to get a copy for me. I'm on the list, apparently. I'm not sure how it impacts the people behind the movie, but there definitely seems to be a surge in interest in the series itself.
