Maybe it was an attempt to wrap up both the River and the Reaver story arcs in on go, in case this turns out to be Firefly's dying breath.
yeah, i get that - but at times it seemed as if they had specifically chosen the Reavers to be the bad guys who are such a big threat - when in the tv show they were mostly an outskirts-enemy; one who everyone feared but much happier to do their business on the outside of the central planets.
but i do agree that they were trying to wrap things up for the future, and they did do that rather nicely.
its still a good sci fi movie; maybe i was just expecting more from it.

My personal favourite among the crazy speculations:
Book is the Operative, sent back from the future! It's so stupid, but at the same time, it's scary how well it fits...
Suddenly being a Doctor Who fan seems so level-headed and sensible.

I've not seen Firefly, but I went to see Serenity last night on budget night.
Meh. It certainly wasn't 'A movie for everyone' as billed by Whedon in the pre-movie blurb.
Ok, so why do I care that a governing alliance of loads of worlds that I know nothing about has covered up the deaths of 30 million people who were dead at the start of the movie?
Seems like it would have made a decent two-episode TV story, but for a movie seemingly aimed at introducing non-fans to the series? Nope, failure.

I got the impression that it was a big deal because the Reavers were created in the process.

Yeah, but the emotional impact is more easily missed by folks who haven't seen the show.

I haven't seen the show. I was attached enough to the main characters by the plot that I don't think I needed to see the TV show. Maybe I've just got too much of a weakness for the setting and style that I overlooked some of the flaws in the other bits. Normally I'm highly critical of movies in general, however, and I really enjoyed Serenity.
