Low Moral Fiber has a good point. If it takes somebody to persuade you to like a movie, then it originally didn't catch your interest, and it isn't worth it for you. I personally love the movie, but whatever. Don't be shocked because somebody out there doesn't like it.

By the way, the trailers sucked. I can totally understand if the trailers make people shun away this movie. I wouldn't say that the scenes that they showed were the worst scenes in the movie, but I would say that they actually mean something when they are put into context.
That's pretty much my point, and what confuses me. The trailers suck. The 9 minute clip had nothing to offer.
Yet people praise the movie -- and I believe it can be a good movie. If I didn't put any weight on the reviews and people's opinions here, I wouldn't even consider buying the DVD.
But because it's a movie based on a tv-series that seems to enjoy, well, not quite yet a cult following but perhaps on its way there, and it's made by a man who's brought to tv screens some other series that have a very strong fan base.... Well, it takes more than a couple "yeah, it rocks!" comments to convince me of that, because most likely those comments come from people who love everything Whedon's done. I was looking for comments also from non-fans, and got them too. That's why I will buy the DVD. It's probably an ok movie. I might even like it a lot, but that of course remains to be seen.

It's not that, it's just everyone's going in circles trying to point out that the movie is good, and the fact of the matter is you're not going to like it. Let's move on. It's not deep, it's not going to change your perspective of the genre or of anything, really. It's a popcorn flick, and it does that well. Why anyone cares that you see it is beyond me.
They don't. This is called conversing, debating, exchanging points of view. People are just taking part in it. Last time I checked, the discussion was open to others than Whedon apologists, or established fans, too.
Of course the thread would've been so much more interesting, had we had a couple of more pages of "Serenity rocks" comments, instead of anyone daring to question "Ok, but why?".
Don't take this too seriously, man. I'm not.

I never found Buffy to be in slightest bit interesting. Firefly, I liked, it's fun. I liked Serenity far more than the series it was spawned from.

That's good to hear. I'm not entirely sure I'm in the Whedon tv-series target audience, but a comment like that tells me that the film isn't quite like the series, although the characters and the setting might be.

It was pretty well established that people in this thread found the movie to have good writing, good characters, and a good story. Cliff's Notes on the way.
Also, you come off as a right dick with your "I swim upstream" and "I LIKE INTELLIGENT SCI-FI LOL CONTACT". So if people seem agitated, it might be for more than the fact that you're less-than-enthused by some movie we like.
My roommate never watched the series, and he never watched Buffy or anything by Whedon, and he liked the movie. Wheeee.

You're pretty much the only one who seems to be really agitated here, so find a block of ice to sit on, ok? You should also check your keyboard - your caps lock seems to be getting stuck.
Chill out, man. Call me a dick again if it'll calm your nerves.

Not as fun when I have permission. Against the grain, and all that.

;) Sorry about that.

thats an interesting comment - purely from the standing that the movie Serenity IS the tv show Firefly; but with fancier special effects.
no really, thats all - having watched the tv show numerous times, from what i've seen of the movie (granted i havent been to see it at the cinema yet) it has the atmosphere and the feeling the tv show captured.
so does that then mean that for us to enjoy movies we need whiz-bang effects? not just that, but is a good movie now one that has
all of that.

It was mostly the faster pacing and suspensefulness of the movie that appealed to me, while the TV series is more leisurely, and does more character development type stuff; I know people who liked the TV series better than the movie for the exact same reason.
