Let me ask another question - give us a few examples of sci-fi you do like, mol. And in the case of Star Trek/Star Wars, why do you like them?

I'm done here, because this isn't a big thing, but I could quote your last 3 paragraphs and break your arguments/statements, you should be careful as to what to write, well bye for now.
Sure you could.
I'm so sorry I don't instantly join the Praise Serenity crowd. I know it must be difficult to accept.
It's just me. I like to swim upstream. But the rest of the world will surely bow to the magnificence of Serenity.

Like I said before, I watched those when I was young. Now they have more a nostalgic value. At best Star Trek had very good social commentary with a nice mix of science fiction. Of the movies, The Wrath of Khan stands out.
I like intelligent sci-fi. You know, if you read what I've said before, I've only complained about the quality of the Serenity trailers and what kind of an impression they give of the movie. I've said that because of the positive reviews and comments I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt. Some people just dont't seem to agree with that, and I guess feel so strongly about the film that any questioning remark about it provokes strong defensive reactions in them.
I though that The Arrival was quite good. Not great, but far better than the imbecile Independence Day that came the same year.
Contact was pretty good, although it could've been even better. I've read the book (which was good, but not quite great).
Star Wars is still good, or let's say episodes IV and V. VI was ok, but episodes I and II were just technical demonstrations and as movies pretty much crap. Episode III was somewhat better. Certainly best of the 'New Trilogy'.
Blade Runner is great. I love that movie. I love the 'Director's Cut' better, although I'm not strongly divided between them. Both versions are very good.
Alien was brilliant, still is. Aliens was intense, and quite good. The other sequels have been crap.
2010 was good. It wasn't as good as the book, which didn't have that stupid charicature cold-war animosity between the crews as the movie did. 2001 is a classic. Not my favorite sci-fi movie, but very interesting.
Tarkovsky's 'Solaris' is fantastic. Lem's 'Solaris', the book, is one of my favorites, and I saw the movie when I was a kid. It left a strong impression on me.
In general, I like movies that don't go out of their way trying to explain the 'future' stuff, but take it as granted, as the world that is, and focus on the story and the people. I don't enjoy films that only use the sci-fi setting as a new backdrop for a Beverly Hills 9020020303020 teenage-angst-ridden-relationship-crap.
The Terminator was relentless, and Terminator II was a lighter version of it, yet enjoyable. It's bordering the level where the action takes a precendence over the story, though.
Minority Report was ok, although most new films seem to ride too much on the effects.
Dark City was really good. Not entirely unpredictable, but very stylish and interesting. One of the better ones in semi-recent years.

It's not that, it's just everyone's going in circles trying to point out that the movie is good, and the fact of the matter is you're not going to like it. Let's move on. It's not deep, it's not going to change your perspective of the genre or of anything, really. It's a popcorn flick, and it does that well. Why anyone cares that you see it is beyond me.
Also, you swim upstream. Hell yeah, rock and roll.

Bottom line: it's a very good movie.
It's not like it's trying to cure cancer or anything. It's worth your ten bucks.

Low Moral Fiber has a good point. If it takes somebody to persuade you to like a movie, then it originally didn't catch your interest, and it isn't worth it for you. I personally love the movie, but whatever. Don't be shocked because somebody out there doesn't like it.
Also, I can understand what Mol is saying, that people need to accept criticisms, but criticizers need to also accept feedback on what they say too. Don't be suprised to how people are reacting, they are doing to you exactly what you did to the movie.
...And that's my two cents:joke:
By the way, the trailers sucked. I can totally understand if the trailers make people shun away this movie. I wouldn't say that the scenes that they showed were the worst scenes in the movie, but I would say that they actually mean something when they are put into context.

If he doesn't like cheesy dialog, he's not going to like Serenity - but then, he shouldn't have liked Star Wars or Star Trek, either, so I think mol is just full of it.
And criticism of a movie he hasn't seen yet falls kind of flat.
Still, the trailers weren't anything special. I found some of them amusing.

Sure. But there are various ways of playing it out. I'm talking about the Beverly Hills 9202...whatever type of crap that seams to be prevalent in many tv series today. There are conflicts abound, but the people are entirely superfluous and uninteresting.
It depends on how it's written in the story and do I initially care about the characters.
