By the fort there is a big expanse of water. At one end there is a metal grill thing with mist and howling wind.
After some messing around, I managed to actually throw a small rock down one of the holes! What happened next suprised me - a mesage appeared on the screen (like the tutorial notes) saying "The slasher of veils is after you", and then I was booted out into the desktop! Wierd!
I dont know whther this is relevant, but the date on my PC system clock was set to 1/4/2002.

I'll give it a try when I'm back home...
About the "Slasher of Veil": it is - for the hopefully very few of you who don't know - the "big boss" at the end of Ultima Underworld.
It lives at the very bottom of the volcano around which the Underworld was built.
As you might have noticed on the 3 maps in Arx that are discoverable after passing through the ceiling of each of the first 3 levels, there is a central "hole" in each map, just like in UUW.
The central hole in UUW was ending in the Slasher of Veil's lair.
So, by throwing your rock in the hole in Arx (which is definitely a tribute to UUW), it falls right onto the Slasher's head and, angry as it surely is, it's now after you. :)
About the crash, it might just be one of the commonly encoutered crashes of the demo and I don't think the date is for something in all this.

Excellent !!! How many hours do you guys spend on that demo to find all these things : I didn't even know this one myself ! (I'll find out who did it...)

I have been trying to throw things through that hole for more than 15 minutes and I didn't manage to throw anything in the hole (actually holeS as there are 2). :(
I even tried the smallest objects (rings, mushrooms, apples), but none of them "accepted" to go through. :(
