Just a quick question. It seems as though the sci-fi on TV these days is really hit-or-miss (mostly miss) and it comes and goes with little or no news. So, what is on currently that is worth watching and following? I don't have time to watch it all. I liked FarScape quite a bit, the 1st StarGate show, and most of the StarTreks if that helps.

Firefly, most likely. And a lot of people think fairly highly of Battlestar Galactica (never seen it personally).

Hm. I'll have to give those a look. Thanks, Scots. Isn't Firefly a Joss Whedon deal? Is it as good as Buffy or Angel? Still have to get around to checking out Dollhouse.

I watched it first, so it has a special place in my heart. IMO it also has less of the heavy cheese of early
Buffy and
Angel. And it managed to make me be invested in the characters within twelve episodes, which is no mean feat. If you liked
Buffy and/or
Angel, chances are you'll like
Firefly.

Firefly put me to sleep. That's the nicest thing I can say about a Joss Whedon creation. The rest just make me angry.

I don't know about Firefly, but Serenity was a pretty decent movie overall. I think you'd get more mileage out of watching Firefly first though, because I couldn't much relate with that rag-tag bunch of spacefaring cowboys. The way the narrative unfolded over the first half was pretty engaging, though.
Orson Scott Card, on the other hand, thinks it's exactly how (
http://www.hatrack.com/osc/reviews/everything/2005-09-30-extra.shtml) he'd like the Ender's Game movie to be. I'm not too sure if I should be excited or dejected by that prospect.

The Space Western aspects of Firefly are toned down a lot in the film and that was one of the best things about it for my money. Also the 'big secret conspiracy' of the film is kinda lame compared to what was implied in the show.
It's a good question though. I can't think of any sci-fi series that I think is flat out genius (off the top of my head. There might be some). The new Battlestar is probably one of the best sci-fi series of all time and should be watched by any space nerd, but I still have pretty serious reservations about it.

Agreed about Galactica, it's an absolute must-see. However, and $deity knows I'm a complete BSG nerd, it doesn't hold a candle to the bright flash of awesomeness that was Firefly.

Also, if you're gonna see the movie, watch the series first.

Pfffft, the Space Western was one of the reasons it's so great!
And yeah, agreed that there isn't any current series that's GREAT... I like most of the ones currently running (Fringe, Dollhouse and hopefully Stargate Universe in the autumn), but I long for some REAL space sci-fi - with lots of ships, lasers and pew-pew.
And we all know that even though Universe is supposed to take place in this ancients' ship that's speeding through various galaxies, they'll still end up running around British Columbia's forests during most episodes ;). Not that those can't be fun, mind you, but... see the "space" part above.

Can we just have it etched in stone that you hate Joss Whedon so you don't trot this out every time he's mentioned?
Honestly, you're reminding me of myself a few months after BioShock came out.
