I assume your install is not mod-ready yet, otherwise you would not ask.
First make sure your game is patched. Then get the db extractor from here: (
http://customize.addondb.com/627/stalker-mod-tool/)
This utility is dead easy to use. Extract the gamedata files. I don't remember which one contains the file se_respawn.script, but it's certainly in the script folder. Just keep extracting until you'll get it. The script folder is one of the main folders so you won't have to search for it.
Next you have to tell your game to give priority to the normal folders, not the compressed archives. In order to do this, open your fsgame.ltx and change 'gamedata = false' to 'gamedata = true'. Of course you have to create the same folder structure in the Stalker root, or just move in what you have extracted.
And then... open the file and take a look at it. I'll stop here with the explanation. Tinkering with the cap settings and respawn values is so easy you'll figure it out as soon as you see it. Just think what you're doing otherwise you'll be wasting your time playing an unbalanced game.
Let me know how it goes.

Yah, now I get it, thanks. :)

I'm tempted to try this out, but I want to finish the game normally first.
Decisions, decisions.

I set each faction to have max 8 ai in the map with 3000 seconds between spawns. I also boosted up the presence of wild life. I'm sick of bandits.
The bad news is that - I think - there are 3 different types of "spawning", and the method described above is only responsabile for A-Life, the random factor...
There are almost certainly AI spawned at the beginning of each map. In few words, if you wipe out every single enemy and the re-enter the zone, it will be filled again, ignoring completely the new spawn times and max cap.
Then there are pre-scripted spawns.
In the end we have the random spawns.
I really hope the devs by saying "slowed down A-Life" meant there won't be Bandit Fest anymore. If you read in the encyclopeadia the description of Garbage sector, you'll see that it mentions rookie stalkers and...an occasional bandit

Occasional eh? Makes me wonder if this is a bug rather than a pure imbalance issue.
Rogue Keeper on 13/4/2007 at 13:40
More like hordes of bandits and an occasional stalker.
Wish the new patch was out. But I think they are fixing many things diligently.
I feel sorry for the rookies, I find their dead bodies too often. But hey, it's a hard living out there.
Interesting is I have climbed to Veteran level somehow quickly. I was a Rookie for suspiciously long, then I finally reached Experienced and whoa, not so long after that I was Veteran - and I have more than half of the game ahead of me.

One megapatch is better than many smaller ones.

More on ranking :
I am somewhere in the middle of the game, just visited Yantar for the first time (what a terrible place!) and I checked my ranking after a long time.
Couldn't believe my eyes, I was rated as Number One stalker with score of 1070!
And of course, expert. I climbed the food chain to the very top suspiciously quickly, or is it set so on purpose?
I wonder if this ranking system has any good sense and reason in the game.

You get points for killing wild animals as far as I know, you can collect quite a bit of points if you go hunting every now and then to spend those excess shotgun shells.

Sadly, more I play and more I become convinced that most of what happens in the game it's just fake, gameplaywise.
1) After more than 100 hours of playing and I didn't see ANY npc travel through the zones. I read posts where people say they met Wolf in the Garbage and so on... It didn't happen to me. Everytime I enter a zone, the enemies spawn at the same points, so all this A-Life talks is just marketing shot.
2) I tried the "AI with mind of its own" mod. Interesting. The npcs really do stuff, without scripts... of course if you mean walking around, dying at military checkpoints or in the anomalies, then yes. They do quite a lot. With this mod I saw many stalkers leave the bar area and head for the Wild Territories or Warehouses. I followed them until they disappeared over the horizon. Then I followed them to the next area. No sign of them. Another fake.
Following their "A-Life" they don't even sit near camp fires anymore, they just walk around.
3) Ranking list... I don't even know what its purpose really is. Surely I didn't see it changing, as if nobody else except you was killing stuff in the zone.
It's a good game. Not as good as its idea that was sold to us, but good nevertheless.
