There seems to be a unanimous agreement that Thief 3 and DX 2 will bring droves of newbies with them - not a bad thing, we need fresh blood occasionally. Not in the literal sense. Well, maybe sometimes, but they usually live. Ahem. AFAIK, unregistered members can't use the Search function, and so they tend to register and ask a question without realising that they can now search. Now, admittedly it's been a long while since I registered, but IIRC there was no announcement about said Search function. The thought occurs that bringing this up when someone registers, and hinting that it is a Good Thing, might cut down on the number of repeat 'Please help me [whatever]' threads.
Just a thought.

Why not just let unregistered users search? Is that such a terrible thing?

I believe unregistered users are not able to search due to the consderable processing requirements of running a search. If this is the case, then it is not unreasonable (although I did prefer the days when guests could search).

I believe disabling the searching for non-registered users prevents access to the <a href="http://ttlg.com/forums/memberlist.php?s=" target="_blank">member list</a> which includes member profiles and prevents random bots from harvesting the thousands of email addresses.
But yes, I think it may be a good idea to add something to the resgistration template that says you can search, or something to that effect anyway. :)

You mean access to the search function is not independent of access to the member list, or the ability to view email addresses? That seems rather strange... I would have expected the access levels required for forum searching, member list viewing, member list searching, profile viewing, and email address viewing to all be independent of the others...

No, each of these functions (search. memberlist and member profile viewing) is individually disabled for non-registered users, they are not linked to one another. The member access is disabled for the reasons David mentioned and mopgoblin was right about why we have search available only to registered users.
Though this is a good point and maybe enabling searches for guests is something we could try again, or at least add the info to the reg page.. but believe me, folks do NOT read that stuff generally anyway.

...although if Daxim were still around, it'd give him a good excuse to really let rip...
