Citalopram takes about 2 - 3 weeks to kick in properly, and you'll probably notice that after the first few days the euphoria it creates starts to disappear so don't be surprised if you start feeling a bit off again until you hit the 2 - 3 week mark. If you are still feeling down after that I'd recommend getting back to your doctor asap and seeing if he/she will up the dosage at all (I'm guessing you are on 10 - 20mg to start).
Hope that you start feeling better soon scumble :).

Best of luck, scumble. I don't really know whether or not I believe drugs are a realistic or healthy long-term option for overcoming depression, but hopefully that won't become an issue for you. Remember, try to take a break at some time if you can. It'll do wonders.

Not an expert, but I think I remember some form of depression caused by chemical imbalances in the brain; so medication is the only way to remedy the problem.

I was in that camp for a long time (didn't really think long term medication was a good idea) but I'd have to say now that I'm 6 months in on a daily 30mg Paxil regimen that there really is such a thing as brain chemical imbalance. My only regret is that I was miserable for 5 years when I didn't need to be.

Yes, exactly. The brain is another organ in the body that things can go wrong with, it's not just a magical place where your mind lives and controls everything. Just as things can go wrong in your brain to cause your body to not work properly, e.g. paralysis, epilepsy and so on, things that control your mood can also malfunction.

The first few days I was feeling worse in the morning and better in the evening. Now it seems to be evening out a bit and I'm feeling a bit brighter in the morning. I suppose there's an element of this sort of medication making you realise quite how unhappy you were feeling beforehand.

The way I look at it is that there's something off in my body making me feel unhappy most of the time and it's very difficult (and time consuming) to find out what it is. I reckon I've been depressed in some way for 15 years or so to be honest, and I don't really want to waste any more time being morose. Maybe it's possible to find out what the original cause is, but for now I just need a bit of energy and motivation.
