And yet I hear the opposite an awful lot too, common comments from the elder generation back home in the UK were: "don't stay here", "spread your wings", "find better opportunities/lives", "I'd do it if I had the chance again".
Of course there is truth in that too. But note, the people who say that are the people who did not move, and always stayed in one spot. So the basically have only seen one side of the medal. And thus they can not really compare. My point of course is not black&white. I just wanted to say: there are benefits to staying in a place where you enjoy living. Those are often overlooked. As in modern society, everything must change, be interesting and challenging. I'd say: fuck challenge.

If your job is in central then Carshalton is still going to be a trek. Is your wife working too?
You could always move further north. Birmingham? Leeds?
Putney is where I have to get to, and it should only be about 30-40 mins. The wife won't be working immediately so there isn't much else to be done in the short term.

Then why not live in Putney or Richmond? Or out towards Staines? Tis more rural that way. Heck, Egham wouldn't be too bad.

It's too expensive with our current income, especially Putney or Richmond. Even Weybridge is too much and I don't really fancy the area near Staines. I suppose the family connection is more important.
