From the article in the first post:
Quote:
Sci Fi is coming off the best year in its history. In primetime it ranked 13th in total viewers among ad-supported cable networks in 2008. It’s a top-10 network in both adults 18 to 49 (up 4%) and adults 25 to 54 (up 6%).

Hey guys, we're more successful than ever, let's totally fuck it up. <--- is this how the mind of every businessman works or what

You're absolutely right Jason. This is emblematic of what is wrong with the entertainment business, and really business as a whole these days. They take something that is already profitable and successful, and decide that it isn't profitable and successful enough, so they water it down in order to diversify the audience, and in the process both destroy the creative culture that was the foundation of its success, and alienate its core market.
Does anyone remember the last time they saw a cheetah on the Discovery channel? They started running nothing but motorcycle shows, so someone made another channel for the nature crap (TLC I think it was) and then they started programming it full of home decorating nonsense, so they made Animal Planet so there was a place for actual animals, and now they've decided to run reality television on that. Fuck if I know where the nature programming is now, as I gave up on television years ago, but I'm sure that whatever channel it's on will be playing reruns of COPS very soon. I remember when A&E had ballet on it - now it has Dog the Bounty Hunter.
It's just the same with business generally. Does anyone have a clue what it is that GE does these days? The last thing I saw with a GE badge on it was was my late grandmother's 20-year-old television set.

Well, I have some personal experience from when I still thought IT work was a worthwhile career path and ended up being laid off about 800 times. In each case, the company had just become profitable, the executive leadership decided to take out a huge pile of credit and expand the business into areas that were risky and/or we knew nothing about, and within a year the entire company tanked. I really don't understand how the minds of most businessmen work apparently, because if I were running a company and it was becoming successful, I would take a very conservative approach to running the company to ensure that the success continued.
Edit: Oh, and GE does a lot of stuff beyond selling products to mainstream consumers, apparently. I work with someone whose husband does sales or something with them, and supposedly they're doing quite well somehow. A lot of their work is being done in energy and defense I think.
