In some universe, the name “Syfy” is less geeky than the name “Sci Fi.” Dave Howe, president of the Sci Fi Channel, is betting it's this one.
Nope. Sorry. Try the next universe, though I doubt you'll get a better reception there.
Quote:
“The name Sci Fi has been associated with geeks and dysfunctional, antisocial boys in their basements with video games and stuff like that, as opposed to the general public and the female audience in particular,”
And this is supposed to fix that? Seriously? The name makes me want to never watch it again (not that I have time to watch it in the first place).
Quote:
"So it's changing your name without changing your name,” Mr. Howe said.
So what exactly is the point, especially considering that the new name sounds exactly the same as the old one?
And why does the Sci Fi channel have reality shows and wrestling anyway? That's what Spike is for.

PNG images tend to be bloated in file size. JPGs and GIFs are smaller and more dial-up/bandwidth friendly.

"Syfy" kind of reminds me of "syphilis". Or "sycophantic". Or "Schlafly". I certainly wouldn't naturally pronounce it "sci-fi". I'd probably tend toward "see fee", or even "sih fih".

Hrm. Point taken, but I got the impression that it's still supposed to be pronounced as "Sci Fi."
Even though you wouldn't naturally pronounce it that way, I would venture to guess that most people who notice that the Sci Fi channel has been replaced with the Syfy channel (with no prior knowledge of the change) will probably default to the "Sci Fi" pronunciation based on the channel's previous name. And by the time the old name fades out of knowledge, Syfy will have probably either been replaced or the pronunciation will have stuck with it, since it'll have been used for so long.

Me too...
If a certain game-related rumor is true, I hope they won't name it "Theif 4" just to be cutting-edge.
Ulukai on 16/3/2009 at 21:44
More like Theef 4U :(

If they wanted to go the leet route, why stop at Syfy?
They may as well have gone with 51£!

This is probably more to do with making themselves a unique Google result than any of the more PR-ey explanations they claim.
Also explains why website-that-I-hate-but-nevertheless-keep-reading SyFy Portal recently renamed itself Airlock Alpha. Presumably they were handsomely rewarded. I hope they enjoy their solid gold cars while they're copy-pasting press releases and taking the credit for getting Jericho uncancelled!
I really hate that site.
Jericho was good though.

oh, and 'syfy' would be funnier if you knew polish
Hahaha, that's what I was thinking. And oh how perfectly fitting!

In Polish, "Syfy" can be roughly translated to have the connotation of "Pieces of shit." It's even conjugated properly and all :joke:
