The insane respawning in RttUNN FM didn't stop me, so I think 2x more respawn rate in the original SS2 would just gain me more supplies from the enemies' lifeless bodies. :p

Hey everyone.
Thought I'd update.
I have played a little more of the game since I started, and I have just
restored power to the elevator and gone to floor 3.
Thus far, it seems as if the scariness comes from what you previously mentioned, and also the dreadful Midwives *shudders*. They're downright creepy and a pain to get rid of (and I haven't even gotten to the spiders yet).
Anyway, I must say, the game grows on you quickly. I like these little RPG elements (and specifically the fact that you need to find different elements to research objects). It can be a little tricky to figure out where you're supposed to go half of the time, though. Also, I think the cyber modules are a little scarce...
That's not to say I don't like the game. Quite the contrary, in fact. I'm curious to see what the game has in store for me next...

The cyber modules are just right, especially on Hard and Impossible.

This is something I've been thinking about lately too. What is it exactly that makes System Shock 2 such an immersive and frightening game (for some of us, at least). I'm just brainstorming now...* As someone has already mentioned, the sound plays a very large role in this. The hums. The silence. I play with music off, so I don't think music plays a large role in atmosphere (at least not when it's fast techno, like in engineering).* Being alone of course, and quite vulnerable. Weapon degradation and monster respawns reinforce this.
This is a common opinion, but it's different for me. I found the music perfect. See, the game, on it's own, creates the eerie, creepy, "never safe" feeling. Now, with the fast techno music (and a hybrid chasing after you), this feeling turns into outright panicky anxiety, which is even more immersive.

I like MedSci1 & 2 and Ops2 music the most, the way they sound makes me feel very uneasy, especially when I hear something sneaking up behind me.

ive only played this beautiful, wonderful game on impossible. now, ive heard that people think that impossible is well...impossible. but i never found that to be the case. challenging, yes. and you gotta devote time to it consistently (preferably at night, with the lights off, and headphones on) but never hard as hell. does that make me a bad ass? or are there others out there that feel that impossible isnt that hard.
and btw i agree with bjossi. the spiders are the creepiest...

oh and in terms of music, i forget what songs go with what, but this game features maybe the best music ive ever heard in a game. and ive been playing games since i was 4. not only is the music good, but oh my god does it add to the atmosphere. some of it is downright creepy, and even adds to the whole isolationist effect, as well as the tense atmosphere. lemme try to highlight which songs im talking about...
im getting this off of the official soundtrack download
medsci 2
ops 1 (altered cargo bays music..)
hydro 2
ops 3 (maybe the least scariest/creepiest of the bunch)
command 3
hmm..theres some songs missing from that dl pack. namely the music in the cargo bays. first time i played through that...wow. what a creep fest.
what do u guys think?

For atmosphere and catchy rythm, I have to say I prefer the music in the Serious Sam games myself. Unreal also has damn good music. But SS2 has great tunes too, I looove Ops2 and both MedSci's. :thumb:
