I'm sure prisons aren't exactly like they were depicted in The Shawshank Redemption but if even 10% of that is reality, I can see how spending a life behind bars is worse than the relatively quick and painless dispatch of a lethal injection.

War is government sanctioned and funded murder, how's that for a hand grenade?
Abortion is murder.
Top that.
;)

Now the prisons really would be busy if we locked up every state-sanctioned murderer wouldn't they!

So guys, doesn't this case really highlight how much the US needs more gun control?

The US population definately needs better gun control. Particularly when shooting mexican immigrants.

For the legal record, legal war falls under self-defense ... since use of armed forces can only be sanctioned for (1) direct self-defense (the enemy tanks are already preparing to roll across your border) or (2) pursuant to a Security Council Resolution under Art 38 (where they respond to a direct threat to int'l peace) ... and that's it. Similar thing for police being sanctioned to shoot perps directly threatening their lives. But once the threat has been contained, there is no authorization for force for some other purpose.
Although we all know how hilariously these things get interpreted in practice (Panamaian-trafficked cocain kills US kids like soldiers so let's take out Noriega for self-defense lol. The 1991 Iraq peace-treaty had provisions on WMD, and breaking those reinstates the 1991 Security Council Resolution authorizing force lol).

I was just tossing a cat amongst the pigeons for a lark. I'm a silly pacifist at heart but I do understand and empathise with the notion of revenge, especially in today's (sometimes) overly-forgiving society.

Fine and by choosing to live in a state with capital punishment you also consent to the fact that you will held to a higher standard and will be executed for pre-meditated 1st degree murder. That does not however, make it right.
You're not seriously this stupid that you can't see the difference, right?
