But my obvious point is that it's ridiculous to call a national competition the World Series
STOP THE FUCKING PRESSES. THEY USED HYPERBOLE TO MARKET A SPORTING EVENT!!!!!
Next you're going to tell me that it really
wasn't the "Fight of the Century."
Guess what? Lord Stanley doesn't really own that Cup, either.

(
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_series) Wikipedia Dispells the Rumors.
Quote:
A persistent myth is that the "World" in "World Series" came about because the New York World newspaper sponsored it. Baseball researcher Doug Pappas refutes that claim, demonstrating a linear progression from the phrase "World's Championship Series" (used to describe the 1903 series as well as some of the 19th-century postseason series) to "World's Series" (a term first used in the 1880s and which persisted for decades) to "World Series". Furthermore, investigation of the New York World for the relevant years revealed no evidence of the supposed sponsorship.

I'd honestly be interested to find out if there are many other national comps that claim to be a worldwide competition.

You have to admit, though, the 'World Series' would actually be a pretty good event if they let in Japan, Cuba, etc
As well as making a lot more sense, of course

They did that earlier this year, called it the World Baseball Classic.
Japan won. :(

Yeh I got your point already RBJ, trust me, after having studied Antony and Cleopatra at highschool I've had hyperbole shoved down my throat enough to get the picture. I was actually asking if it is the only national comp in the world that claims to be a world competition...
Rug Burn Junky on 26/9/2006 at 14:19
Clearly you didn't get the point because IT IS NOT CLAIMING TO BE A WORLD COMPETITION AT ALL. THAT IS AN EXAGGERATION BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT HYPERBOLE MEANS, YOU DINK.
