I mean, if there was a death cult surrounding Putin and citizens and leaders in Russia alike treated him as god, I could see that happening. But there is no evidence of that. Willing to die defending your country is one thing, collective suicide is something very different. It means you are willing to sacrifice everything -- your children, your future, the continued existence of humanity.
It's a cultural problem. Russia sees "western civilization" as humanity suicide driven by satanic influences. They see "civilization" as decadence of "culture". Just like it's written in the fascism book of basic fascist principles :p (with Satan as real as you for catholic fascists, and a metaphore of disorder+disobedience for the others - these are really the basic of the fascist mindset and it's why fascism brings totalitarism and authoritarism to a zealous godlike level you can well perceive in Dugina's words )

If Russians really were as fanatical to see Western culture as an existential threat, Putin wouldn't have problems finding conscripts.

Russians are just like italians during Mussolini's times.
If the authorities ask them their opinions they'll answer like I've described. More spiritualistically maybe (see gays rights question, being gay couples "unable to give birth" - that's the root of the problem for nationalisms of every era - no births -> no subjects + no soldiers )
If you ask them they'll simply tell you that they want "peace" and "to be let alone" in the end. People are NOT interested in this kind of philosophical rumblings and rants but they must act along the script to get their cherished "normal life" back. A tragic hope.
Just translate this, if you're interested in the mindset Putin adopted from Dugin&other anticommunists figures of late USSR and Yeltsin era: (

Holy Shit! You can't get away from this stuff. ANOTHER high-ranking Russian died from falling off something:

Putin Ally Dies After Falling Down Stairs on Day of Russia Mobilization
The former head of the Moscow Aviation Institute has died after falling down "several flights of stairs," the institute reported Wednesday.
Scientist Anatoly Gerashchenko, 72, "fell from a great height," according to the university, which described his death in the Russian capital as an accident.
The institute also said paramedics were called to the scene but pronounced Gerashchenko dead in the same location. The place where he reportedly fell to his death is still unknown.

Also, Russia's only booming industry: one-way flights out of Russia

One-way flights out of Russia were rocketing in price and selling out fast on Wednesday after President Vladimir Putin ordered the immediate call-up of 300,000 reservists.
Putin's announcement, made in an early-morning television address, raised fears that some men of fighting age would not be allowed to leave the country.

Hi dema,
I'm definitely not worried about the use of strategic nuclear weapons. Russia and the US have similar technical and organizational safeguards to prevent a rouge leader at any level from initiating a nuclear exchange. It's not like Putin can just press a button. And I am very confident that no nuclear armed state is stupid enough to push Russian that far into a corner. We won't attack Russian soil or attempt decapitation.
Tactical nukes are admittedly messier because nobody knows if either side would respond to a tactical nuke with strategic nukes, and the oldest and smallest stuff in the arsenal have minimal technical controls, which is why the US and Russia had been getting rid of them until fairly recently. Still, I think it's an empty threat. The reason why these weapons exist is to stop a blitzkrieg by conventional forces. Ukraine is not capable of that kind of offensive and not interested in taking the fight into Russia either.
The other situation people seem to be worried about is Russia going scorched earth on their way out as some sick sort of punishment. I think that's credible, and I think they'll get away with it if they don't use nukes or other WMD. But if they use nukes to go after infrastructure and population, that's strategic, not tactical. Even then, I don't think it's likely to spark an exchange of strategic nukes between the US and Russia, but there will be a global realignment and I can't see China and India sticking with Russia. That path leads to the collapse of modern Russia and doesn't serve Putin's interest in his legacy.
I think it's more likely that the Putin regime implodes before it gets that far.

Russian soil=Crimea+Donbas(s) after the referendum.
Every "non russian" soldier on Crimea or Donbas(s) is a violation of "territorial integrity by a foreign power". So no problem with ready excuses to launch an Iskander with a small nuclear warhead.

Debatable, surely the next targets are "civilian&military".
