It's amazing how quickly some of the US right-wing pundits pivoted to, if not outright supporting Putin, then at least justifying the invasion and blaming Democrats for it, somehow. I really shouldn't be surprised by anything they do at this point, but almost overnight it went from awkward silence to "Russian Lives Matter". Everything's a fucking game for them.

The GOP's official party platform is "whatever the opposite of the other guys is". Even if that means loudly and obnoxiously opposing policies that you loudly and obnoxiously supported 5 years ago.

I mean, Oliver North was a total scumbag, but what he was doing was for the US (and he took the fall for higher ups). Flynn is responsible for doing about the same level of stuff but directly undermining US influence for personal profit.
This is a striking contrast. I think "personal profit" is even shortchanging the punchline.
Flynn, Trump, & company openly admire Putinism and want to see it brought into the US.
Trump slipped by two impeachments without so much as a slap on the wrist, one to do with Russian interference in the US election with their more than knowledge, more than blessing, with their literal pathetic begging; and then obstructing the investigation into it (the obstruction part at least being a slam dunk conviction, legally speaking, if Barr would have actually allowed it to go forward), and the second about extorting Ukraine's government to prejudice the second election.
(Side note: the mental acrobatics Reps are going through right now about how Trump is the right prez for handling Russia's invasion of Ukraine is wild. Do they even remember what they've been screaming for the last 5 years? )
And then there's the whole host of cronies aiding the whole corrupt business, a lot of them getting off or getting pardoned. All of it was aimed directly at undermining US democracy & classic-liberalism (as in politics keeps its hands off the fundamentals).
And then you have people like Nixon and Oliver North, et al, that actually did fall on their swords for their misdeeds.. Justifiably, don't get me wrong. And I would question a lot about them, like how filled they were with their own egos to the cost of everything else. But I wouldn't question that they loved the US & wanted to see its way of life continued, and that they thought that's what they were protecting, however cynically.
Shit, wait, what thread is this again?
Well anyway, the punchline is the same. What a dumb timeline this is.

There is a notable mood shift in Russia, as darkness sets over its economy and the invasion of Ukraine hits major problems. While the beginning of President Vladimir Putin's full-scale war against Ukraine was greeted with cheers, clapping, and demands of Champagne in the studio, the reality sobered up even the most pro-Kremlin pundits and experts on Russian state television.
The ugly truth about Russia's invasion of Ukraine is slipping through the cracks, despite the government's authoritarian attempts to control the narrative.
The Kremlin-controlled state media is doing its best to flip the situation upside down, blaming the victims of Russia's aggression for all of the casualties. On Wednesday's edition of the state TV show The Evening With Vladimir Soloviev, the host claimed the fallout of Russia's bombing of a maternity hospital this week was “fake” with no one there to be injured, despite photos of pregnant women being carried away from the blast that killed at least one child. A guest on 60 Minutes last Saturday even claimed Ukrainians “are firing on each other and blaming us.”
On Thursday, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed that Russia never attacked Ukraine and repeated the same lies as Soloviev about the total absence of patients in the maternity ward and children's hospital bombed by Russia.
[...]
Prior to the invasion of Ukraine, state TV experts predicted that Russia could overtake it in a matter of minutes or a few days. Stunned by the fierce resistance on the part of Ukrainians, Soloviev described them as “the army that is second in Europe, after ours, and which has been prepared for eight years and armed with everything you can imagine.”
Soloviev added: “This is a frightening war that is being waged against us by America.”
To lighten the mood in the studio, the host resorted to one of the favorite pastimes of many Kremlin propagandists: playing yet another Fox News clip of Tucker Carlson and his frequent guest Ret. Col. Doug Macgregor. In the translated video, Macgregor predicted Russia's easy military victories over Ukraine and its total invincibility to Western sanctions. Soloviev sighed and smiled: “He's a lot more optimistic than my previous experts in the studio.”

One of Vladimir Putin’s top Russian commanders who masterminded a massacre has been killed in Ukraine, Kyiv and state TV in Moscow have confirmed.
Colonel Sergei Sukharev, of the 331st Guards Parachute Assault Regiment from the “glorious” Kostroma, and his deputy Major Sergei Krylov were among several members of Russia’s most elite fighting forces who died in a clash with the Ukrainian resistance, on Thursday.
The Colonel was “liquidated” after he “got lost in the military ‘exercises’, but returned home the right way”, Ukraine’s Centre for Strategic Communication and Information Security (Stratcom) said in a statement.
Sukharev was widely understood to be responsible for the Ilovaisk massacre – in which at least 1000 Ukrainian soldiers were slaughtered by Russian forces who did not honour a deal to allow them to retreat safely from the besieged city in 2014.
