All the money invested in yachts is money not invested in weapons.

Why not have both?

Well, that's the U.S.A.'s position, but Russia's economy just isn't all that big.

An article that captures some of the frustrations Russia's neighbours have been feeling after their warnings went unheeded and even ridiculed:
Quote:
(
https://www.politico.eu/article/western-europe-listen-to-the-baltic-countries-that-know-russia-best-ukraine-poland/)
For years, Western Europeans have been dismissive of politicians from Poland and the Baltic countries whenever they sounded the alarm over the expansionist threat posed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
[...]
Instead, the Westerners followed a path of commercial and political appeasement of Putin, led by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, which has now spectacularly backfired with the invasion of Ukraine, the bombardment of its cities and mass emigration.
“The Western Europeans pooh-poohed and patronized us for these last 30 years,” said Radosław Sikorski, a former Polish foreign minister. “For years [they] were patronizing us about our attitude: ‘Oh, you know, you over-nervous, over-sensitive Central Europeans are prejudiced against Russia.'”
The Easterners say they ran into a brick wall when they made pleas for increased NATO deployments, drew attention to cyberattacks and called on Berlin not to let the EU be held hostage by giant pipelines pumping gas straight into Germany.
[...]
“The sanctions policy pursued by the West ... causes more harm to us than to Russia,” Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said. “In politics, this is called shooting oneself in the foot.”
Then-Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius responded by saying it was better to shoot yourself in the foot than to let yourself be shot in the head.
[...]
I can't deny that in the past few weeks, as counterproductive as it is, I myself have had an urge to go "See! See! I wasn't crazy!" for being told over the years that I was exactly that for being wary of Putin's Russia and that it was just the historical enmity speaking or Russophobia or whatever.

It might seem like a small thing compared to bombing hospitals and depopulating entire villages by executions, but it's the sheer glee that gets me here:

Also, exactly like the Soviet army behaved when they visited us the last time.

Quote:
After accusing the U.S. of producing bioweapons in Ukraine, the Russian Ministry of Defense has added another feather-ruffling theory to their accusation: That the U.S. is training birds in Ukraine to spread deadly diseases among Russian citizens.
Quote:
The RIA Novosti broadcast reportedly included maps, documents and photographs of birds bearing the U.S. coat of arms. Konashenkov said Russian military authorities had also captured some of the infected birds from the so-called Kherson Reserve in eastern Ukraine.
I want to see these birds, so they have US insignia on them? Little aviator uniforms?
Here's the footage I believe they're sourcing this from

Michael Flynn: Ukraine's Independence 'Not Vital' to U.S. Interests
(
https://www.newsweek.com/michael-flynn-ukraine-independence-nato-war-russia-1688206)
Where I got this link someone mentioned how Flynn is a "mad c*nt". I responded "traitorous c*nt" is probably more on the money. "mad" is the polite way they explain away Flynn's behavior.
Ukraine's Independence isn't vital to Flynn's financial interests is more like it.
Flynn received money from a bunch of Russian government and large private firms then later messages reveal he was pushing a plan to build Russian nuclear plants in the Middle East, and promising he'd assist in pushing this through the Trump administration. So he was their inside guy to turn a blind eye to this, which is pretty much clearly against US long-term interests. Which makes him just a traitor no matter what you think of US interests.
I mean, Oliver North was a total scumbag, but what he was doing was for the US (and he took the fall for higher ups). Flynn is responsible for doing about the same level of stuff but directly undermining US influence for personal profit.

It's what makes Putin so confident about "West" weakness.
