When the number of deserters began to skyrocket, a Telegram channel linked to Wagner released video footage of the brutal sledgehammer execution of former inmate Yevgeny Nuzhin, who went against the group after winding up in Ukrainian hands.
Since then, according to Romanova, would-be recruits are shown videos of other executions so they know how the group deals with “traitors.”

A 23-year-old man identified only as Artyom told the publication he received a call from someone who said he was representing Wagner and told him “we have a holy war against fascists and faggots.”
After Artyom made clear he wasn't interested, the man reportedly grew frustrated, saying, “The Wagner Center in St. Petersburg is located at 15 Zolnaya Street. If you want to repay your homeland or help in some way, come—we won't hurt you.”
“Nobody's threatening you, but keep in mind we live in the same city.”
So they're cold-calling Russian men now, implying something might happen to them if they don't sign up to Wagner.

In one instance, according to The Beast's translation, Novikov said: "Shelling began, one of the prisoners laid down and didn't cover his own [men]. The shelling stopped, he went back, and the higher-up shouted to him: 'Why didn't you go forward?' And they killed him. The higher-up is killed if his team deserts."
Alexander Drozdov, another former inmate cited in the report, said many of the Russian prisoners sent to the front lines in Ukraine by Wagner had drug addiction and were "completely insane." While some recruited prisoners may desert or disobey orders, others "are just fucked up and bulldoze their way through," Drozdov said, adding that these fighters "are very different from ordinary mercenaries."

If the war will go on WITHOUT direct intervention of airforces in the next 5 years (if Putin remains alive or will have a successor sharing the same dedication to aggression) every major UKraine city will be like this. Of course it's now clear that EVERY ruble will be invested in the war.
You can't change

There's no law you can enforce - in ANY WAY - against a major power without totally defeating it.

This is an interesting angle Timothy Snyder was bringing up in his class, that a big chunk of Russia's population is non-Russian, like the Turkic peoples, but of course the propaganda machine is infinitely malleable to play to them too.
Like if you're a strong nationalist, Ukrainians are or played by European fascist nazis; if you're religious Orthodox or evidently Muslim, Ukrainians are or played by European gay Jewish liberals. They're whatever bogeyman you need to hate.
It's interesting here because Crimea and the southern coast were historically a Muslim khanate the remnants of which Stalin ethnically cleansed in the 1940s, deporting them to the places now fighting against Ukraine as Russian nationalists.

You don't hear much out of Tatarstan in the English language press. Kazan was one of the places in Russia I had hoped to visit after reading all about it when the World University games was hosted there about 10 years ago. That was right before the Sochi Olympics and Crimea invasion when Russia still looked inviting to tourists.

Putin uses proper russian nazis/fascists of related dissolved parties as "patriots" in Donetsk and Lugansk......fighting "ukronazis".
