Well yo ho ho and a bottle of holy jesus christ ive finally done it. thankyou fleshworks for absolutely nothing, and dracflamloc, hats off also for absolutely nothing. By manipulating the file extensions for about 30 minutes i managed to get it working, if only crudely. For anyone else out there who doesn't know and experiences similar trouble, renaming "t3.exe" to "t3 -editor" and have it as a shortcut on the desktop. This should launch the editor as long as your firewall doesnt block it, so add the icons one by one from the Thief3Edit/System folder first.
Goodluck and godspeed (you will need it as its the only solution thus far i can find)

Wow, a triple post + a few insults. You were better off not being able to run the editor . . .

And if no-one creates fan missions, the future of thief will go where exactly?
Probably to role playing forums and that's a fate worse than death....

Who says nobody is creating fan missions? T2 FMs will keep coming out for a long time. The "Flesh Eaters" have been working on a mini-campaign for T3 (who, btw, missed the deadline we set up by 2+ months).
The Dark Mod, I just joined the team two weeks ago, already surpassed T3 in a few areas and it's only in the alpha stage. If you don't know about it:

There will always be a future for Thief and Thief-like universes.

No I'm well aware of it, just I'm saying we have to make best use of what we've got and the editor is far from perfect but it's what we've got so have to make do. The dark mod just isn't my sort of gaming fun, I prefer the thief series itself, than a skin of thief on a multiplayer, each to their own.
Ziemanskye on 1/8/2006 at 12:04
I *think* the darkmod is single player, just on the Doom3 engine rather than this Thief incarnation of Flesh. It might become multiplayer later, but for now they've got a lot of guard AI to program, and that'll likely keep them busy for a while :p
Beyond that though, well, officially the future of Thief is non-existant. There will be no fourth game. Unofficially, well, there's still people making missions for all three games as far as I know (though a lot more tMA than tDP), and more people will hopefully move up to TDS if/when we get a more useful file-format and convertion system established, because the ability to create custom content is rather curtailed and a lot of people don't want to use the stock resources. And since we're deep into unofficial territory, the please-don't-sue-me-we're-not-Thief-really nature of the Darkmod will probably make people happier than TDS when it's eventually released, which isn't going to be for some time yet, so there's still a lot of scope for people to be here.
/end rant.
Beyond that, glad to hear you got it working, though it is unusual the tutorials didn't help - most people don't have trouble with them. *shrugs*
Still, we'll see your work soon enough I'm sure, and we'll all rejoice because frankly there isn't nearly a high enough flow of TDS missions coming out (and before anyone says, I know I'm overdue - I am working on something though)

Allow me to continute the rant for a bit more Ziemanskye.
Uhm, evidently you're not as 'aware' of Dark Mod as you think. Perhaps you should go to our site and read what we're doing with The Dark Mod, it's most certainly
not multiplayer, where did you get that idea? We're a
single player, Thief 1 and 2 inspired, total conversion of Doom 3....contrary to your previous assumptions and if we do our jobs right, it should definately be fun. At the very least, our editing toolset will be far more customizable and easier to use than T3ED, so even if we don't get everything perfect by our first release, the community will be able to tweak and polish it to their hearts content.
In addition to being able to customize the gameplay, we're also releasing our own customized version of the GTK Radiant editor used in Doom 3 and that will also have the source code released so the community can add/ improve/ maintain it for years to come.
Sorry, I just get mildly annoyed when someone claims to know what we're about and completely writes us off based on insufficient information.
You're still more than welcome to apply for a beta mapper kit, in order to start using the tools early and building some alpha maps. Just email me at recruiting@thedarkmod.com and include some screen shots of your previous work.

It all depends what you want to do. If you want to customize every aspect of the game, then the dark mod would be the way to go. If however, you want to make a Thief mission right now, and get it out there right now, so people can start playing it, then I still think TDS is the current weapon of choice, and we shouldn't just write it off.
Getting set up is without doubt a big hurdle for TDS, almost like some kind of painful initiation ceremony - if you can get to the point of exporting and playing your test map, then you're well on your way to making a level :)

I don't believe I was writing anyone off, the darkmod simply isn't for me as i said, and i had heard it rumoured Im sure on ttlg that the dark mod was meant for big things, one of them being a LAN multiplayer based sneak and steal/kill your buddies thief style game.
I myself have and hate doom3, so anything with its name on rings warning bells in my ears so maybe thats where i switched off, sorry I haven't researched enough into the dark mod to perhaps make as bold a claim as i did, but from what I'm aware, the "we're not thief dont sue me" problem as well as no really getting the Garrett-thief feel from the screenshots has probably sealed it for me. Hopefully I'll be stunned by it when its released and drop everything to get it.
Thanks str8g8 I'm definitely inspired by your work on the bridge, kudos for that, it gave me the impression you were influenced by TMA rather than TDP/TDS, is this true? Maybe this is just my gut feeling from the design of the level that you enjoyed TMA over TDP. My 2nd mission using the TDS editor draws heavily on the ambush mission from TMA and also bafford's mansion from TDP, hopefully you'll see part two after the first chapter - I felt quite similar elements of the shipping and receiving mission in the bridge, not sure if this was apparent with anyone else.
For now all I'll say is my first mission's title is "bad moon rising", a cliche probably, but hopefully it'll fill the void of TDS missions, and thats one big void, there's basically only one mission worth playing (no offence to authors here) but besides the bridge, there's no contending ratings up there, and ratings speak for themself :erg:
Chat to you all again soon when I run into snags with the editor!

I'm happy to say that it's definately not true. :) As I said, Dark Mod is a single player Total Conversion of the Doom 3 Engine. We have promoted it as single player since day one. Someone may have said..."Hey, when Dark Mod is released, can I further modify it and make it multi-player?" In which case we would say, "sure, you can do whatever you like and make your own modifications. Doom 3 already supports multiplayer, but don't expect us to spend any time on it." That's simply how flexible the engine is. When it's done...people will be able to 'mod the mod'.

How is this a problem? The Dark Mod is a toolset. Just because we can't name our characters "hammerites" or "keepers", doesn't mean that fan mission authors can't use those names if they want. We can't prevent that. The only limit to what fan mission authors can build, will be their imaginations. You're placing FAR too much emphasis on what we name the characters. It's not like we have written the faction names right on the models. ;)

You're absolutely right. Doesn't have a Garrett-Thief feel at all. ;) Then again, neither did TDS really. I think if you put early Dark Mod next to old Thief 1 and 2 shots, that they have more in common than people give them credit for.

http://img136.imageshack.us/my.php?image=city02tp7.jpgIf you're not getting that feeling, then come and build a small map with our tools and you'll find out rather quickly, that you 'can' get that feeling.
The community is the heart that keeps the Thief world alive...not an 'official' engine. I respect the Fan Mission builders who are faithful to the 'official' content, but in the end..the TDS engine can only go so far and it 'will' eventually hold people back from truly challenging themselves.
