Playing the game, liking it or loving it are all very different from one another, thiefessa. I liked DX:HR, but there were quite a few things I didn't like and felt that EM had either dumbed waaayyy down or just plain taken the reins out of my hands (take-down cutscene, anyone?). I'm not spending $60 on a game just so I can say I played it. It has to appeal to me first and so far T4 is falling far short of that mark.

It's a good game. DX was never as focused as Thief though (I still love the analogy of a swiss army knife vs. a scalpel), and I was never as invested in DX as I am in Thief. And I still hate the third person switching.

There are some minimal 3P elements in Thief
DX:HR had it too. A lot of fans were against this choice before release, but they still ended up liking/playing the game though.
I played it, and knew I could never use the cover system, a take down, or the landing system. I also had to use the debug menu to disable health regen, and after all that, the game was at least awkwardly acceptable.
As much of an annoyance as it was to avoid all those shenanigans in Deus Ex, it sounds downright impossible to avoid most of it in Thief, with all the vertical navigation they're peddling.
:Edit: For that matter, we still don't know if Thief uses health regen...

Exactly, VHS. I agree wholeheartedly.

And again, their justifications for third-person switch are completely baseless, clueless and ridiculous and show, again, that they do not understand basic game design. Such a shame.

Sure, but if one wanted to rant on to people (and even attack people with another view) about how much one really hates something and how crap its going to be; then one must truly hate it and believe in what one says?
I don't see the point of the ranting otherwise.

Dynamic lighting. New Thief is doing what Thief 3 failed to accomplish, and TDM only partially succeeded at.
But Thief 3 did have dynamic lighting and shadows, or am I missing something? You could even hide in a guard's shadow like the new Eurogamer preview talks about; it didn't fully darken your light gem because a person's shadow isn't dark enough to hide in completely, but it reduced it.

Yeah, but it never really used it to its full advantage. It was used for some interesting situations, but didn't go whole hog with it like New Thief sounds like it's doing.
I don't think they could have really. Not with the technology of the time, and the fact they were building the game around a pretty weak machine.

During our demo the player appeared to be sneaking into a home for the blind, and where’s the fun in that?

—during a swordfight scene our player activated focus fighting and had to move a reticle to select enemy body parts, eventually targeting enough areas to chain together a powerful series of attacks.

For a game that’s doing so much technically to bring itself to the modern age, it’s a bit concerning that the same can’t be said for the gameplay. The focus combat and parkour segments are interesting, but the stealth segments feel out of place and ill-constructed. In an age where developers can trust the player to be smarter, it’s weird to see them assuming that the player won’t notice how stupid and predictable the AI can be.
Gee, they sure are focusing on making the stealth the best in this stealth game, in a series which defined the stealth genre!
