HOW am I supposed to make ANY SENSE of that preview unless Vae swings by and TRANSLATES every single line into the most cynical and pessimistic interpretations possible? :p

Doesn't Garrett remove the mask even in the trailer? I'm fairly sure (just guessing here though!) that it won't be the only time you're going to see Garrett's face.

Agreed, and I also hope that they're optional. If they're not, I hope that there's at least enough variety in the takedown moves and those don't happen all the time.

I'm not a fan of timed levels either, but in this case it could work, because it seems that you don't get an immediate "MISSION FAILED!!!" message on your screen when you run out of time, some doors simply close (both figuratively and literally, according to the article!) for you, and you'll have to find another entrance for example. (The guy who wrote the RPS article explained it way better than I did...) I hope that there are some logical explanations for those events though, not just

Well if he's living in a crow's nest (did I read that somewhere) he'll need his mask on - psittacosis could be a problem. I don't think it's unreasonable to be a little bothered by minor details, I can understand that. After all, I get taken out of deep involvement in a fan mission by things like floating objects or typos in texts. These things matter to me, other people may not even notice.

So do I and I don't think it is optional but I admit to skim reading and I may be wrong. I also got the impression that you don't fail particularly but may have to find another way? I need to read the article again.

Well, yes, that's exactly the thing. There was always swearing in Thief games, and quite a lot of it. The thing is, the swearing was in-universe lexicon. They didn't say "By God" they said "By The Builder". They didn't say "You f***er!" they said "You Taffer!".
The games had a surprisingly rich sound design in this regard, and it was one of the things that really helped to make them stand out in terms of immersion. Seeing they've thrown that away for generic edginess is hardly a surprise though, this is clearly a paint-by-numbers AAA release.

Ok, read the preview. I'm starting to feel about this the same way I felt about DXHR in the months leading up to it's release. I'm expecting a good game, though not necessarily one that'll be true to the original. Then again Human Revolution did end up surprising me by genuinely feeling like a Deus Ex game, so who know.
A few of things I really liked in the preview was reading that they've taken more cues from TMA than TDP when it comes to level/mission design, and the talk of increased mobility and the way Garrett's hands interacts with the world sound swell too!
