Different doesn't always mean better. If they need the extra buttons for consoles that's fine, but it shouldn't have any impact on PC play. We've got an entire keyboard. Hopefully they will see fit to expand control for PC players as like many I would be expecting a PC centric build and not a console port to PC.
You're right, sometimes different is worse, and I do hope they go a little more classic style for us PC players. But if they don't, I already have a good idea of how's it gonna play from my time with HR, and it isn't all that bad.

Renz, settle down...I wouldn't go that far. This is simply another sad note in the introductory...There's still time for good things to come, so remember to be open-minded and patient.

Once again, it's different. From the sound of it, they've expanded the move set by quite a bit, and probably needed those extra buttons to do other thing. What? I dunno. Probably kick people in the shins.
It doesn't matter how you slice it...prescribed auto-leans will ultimately compromise intimate player control...it's only a matter of how much of a degree this will be.

what, do you think running round like you've got inner ear trouble is such a fundamental part of thief that you'll start talking like gollum again if it isn't in?
why am I even asking.
WTF are you even saying?

It's not so much autoleaning as it is peaking around corners while you're up against a wall. And as for compromising intimate player control, like I said, new Garrett has a decently expanded move set, so it's not like they've changed it around for the sake of...dread word...streamlining.

Someone on the Eidos forum is concerned that he won't be able to lean while aiming the bow. I guess that's so ingrained in my playstyle that I didn't even think of it. I would sure hate to lose that ability.
Might be referring to my post. It is very ingrained in my playstyle, too; and I've seen YouTube "Let's Play Thief" videos where they do it. It's just a natural thing to do sometimes. If the new Thief doesn't have it, I'll feel unnecessarily restrained.

Exactly, DF.
NuGarrett, I say...

You must understand, it doesn't matter if the move set is expanded if it's full of prescribed auto-moves...because this takes away
intimate player control.
...and we'll see how much streamlining there will be.

Heh, can't blame you for lack of passion at least, that's right! "Perfectly rational" wasn't the first pair of descriptive words that popped into my mind though, but fair enough. :p
It's good to have standards, but that doesn't mean that you should get stuck in the past. It's been nearly nine years since the latest Thief game (or more than thirteen years, according to some), gaming has moved on during that time and so should we. Thief 4 will be a lot different than the previous three games in many ways, but I bet that there'll be a lot of the same as well. The most important thing is whether the core gameplay is still the same, that's what really matters. Does it still
feel like a Thief game? We'll have to wait until we actually get to play it, or at least until we get to see some of the gameplay videos.
So yes, Thief 4
will be different, whether we like that or not. I do realise that even the smallest of changes may feel awkward and significant to someone who has played TDP and TMA and not (m)any other games for the last decade and more, and they'll be disappointed without a doubt if they're expecting to get a Thief 1/2 replica with pretty graphics. This is a
new game with
new ideas and
new features. Some of the new stuff won't be good for sure (but neither was all the old stuff), but it can't all be bad either. Slating all the changes before we even know enough about them and jumping into hasty conclusions doesn't seem perfectly rational to me.

Freaking the hell out over someone freaking out is just hypocritical. You can be cartoony on purpose, so why not recognize the similar technique being used by others in their posts? These "new" game elements are BS, implemented for lame reasons. They don't deserve so much respect. You are compulsively paying money to the game developers, so I can understand overcompensating for your consumerist addiction by defending the garbage you can't just not buy into. Jealous of our budgetary control and informed shopping?
Also, one person's treasure is another person's junk. It's normal for us to want the junk you treasure out of our faces.

So recently I'm more wondering whether there's some psychology at play. Whether the technical limitations of yesteryear played to the advantage of games by making players' imaginations work harder to fill in the detail with the end result being a less passive, more resonant and affecting experience.
This is *exactly* how I feel now and have always felt about the "classic crpgs" of the 80's 90's. I was so wrapped up in the paradox and various enigmas of the time, I wasnt able to word it properly. Thanks!

jtr, I think this is the most ridiculous, self-absorbed, judgmental, and all around stupidest thing I think I've ever read on this board.

Eh? I haven't paid any money to the game developers yet. I kinda doubt that anyone here has. If the gameplay videos turn out to be a disappointment and the game gets bad reviews when it's released, then I'll think twice about buying it. But I certainly won't make any decision just yet, because, uh... why would I? But if you've already decided that you will definitely not buy Thief 4, what will you do if it actually turns out to be better than you expected? You may have denied yourself an opportunity to play a fantastic game. Or in reality, you'll just buy the game and end up looking a bit silly. That's alright too, but you've then just wasted all this time complaining here when you could have spent it on something a bit more positive. The whole situation reminds me a bit of (
http://i67.photobucket.com/albums/h299/rangerxml/boycotting.jpg) this...
Yes, all these new game elements are total BS, like the improved AI and the dynamic lighting and stuff, right? You mentioned earlier how sorry you were when TDM got "crapped on again" when someone (who had actually tried TDM) simply expressed his opinion on how one feature in it wasn't perfect, but here you are "crapping on" Thief 4 and I bet you're not feeling sorry at all. So who's being hypocritical? :p
I might just have to agree with what Renzatic said above.
