So, I'm home for the summer and using my parent's network. Which, unfortunately, seems to be totally fucked.
They're using a Linksys router (a 54GS, I believe) to split the connection between three computers (cable-wise) as well as one laptop. And it's slowww.
Using speedtest.net, I have a download speed of about 1.4 MB/s when plugged into the router. If I plug directly into modem, I get a little over 12 MB/s.
What's the deal? I (who am in no way a network expert) thought that routers weren't supposed to chop bandwidth into pieces. Note that this happens even when only one person is using the internet on a computer. Any ideas? Is it the router? Is it something in the router settings?

No, any decent router shouldn't cause you to only get 10% or so of the raw connection speed. In fact, it shouldn't impose any significant overhead at all at the levels you're talking about.
When you say you're plugged into the router do you mean by a network cable? Are you able to remove all other connections to eliminate the possibility of one of the other computers using a huge amount of network capacity?

Yeah, plugged in via a standard network cable (CAT5?). Hadn't thought of removing the other connections - I'll give that a go.
Assuming that isn't it, is it more likely to be the router hardware or the network settings?

Its an old router, it might be due time to replace it to be honest..

Old? My mom just bought it a year ago. Though instead of asking me or doing some research herself she decided the best way to get a router was to ask the friendly people at Radioshack. Sigh.
