I prefer not to worry much about stats myself, but yeah, that's just one way to play SS2. I find it more immersing but the stats players have been around forever... ADaoB is the result of one of them I think. And I use that. :)
If maximizing is what someone likes to do, then that's just as much role playing to me, as Goggles could easily be such a guy.

I agree that people can play games however they wish, but I also think ZB is right in suggesting that MMOs are making players think more mechanically. When i first played SS2 it was all about the atmosphere, but since playing Anarchy Online and similar games, I also enjoy a bit of min-maxing. Remember also that some people do not have l33t gaming reflexes and a bit of maths when planning a "build" would help them enjoy the game without frustration later.
As for the OCD accusation... coming from someone who wants to replace most of the textures in the game... :erg:
