Yeah, I'm going to try that. A big ambient light for the whole level, and a mansion or cave at one end where the ambient falls off. Then I will have omnis, lights, torches and things through the level that are hidden until you get close enough and enter a volume to unhide them.
I really liked the skybox in Krellek's Laberinth. Rolling grasslands, with muted colors because it only had amient lighting. Looked like moonlight that way.

I have found them to do some strange things as well, but if you use them carefully they seem to do the job. A couple issues I've noticed:
They don't travel across zone borders sometimes, but will sometimes still hit a static mesh inside a zone without lighting the BSP.
If you change the inner radius on them from 0, they create some strange visual artifacts.
