Hey guys,
I've been on here before several years ago. I own Ultima Underworld 1 and Underworld 2. I recently set up a Pentium-II 233 PC with a nVidia Riva TNT2, SB-16 (NON Plug and Play, it has jumpers!!!), Roland SCC-1, and DOS 6.0 with MEMMAKER.
I set up this PC specifically for playing games.
Never the less, I'm playing the Underworld games again, I have yet to beat either, but I've come real close multiple times. Now, I seem to remember there was a patch out there somewhere that would allow you to use the sound blaster OPL3 chip for the NON voice action sounds. Right now, as it is installed from my CD, it uses piano keys and stuff for the action sounds (like when I walk, or there are bats flapping their wings). It's really annoying. This game is awesome, and the music is much better when I use the MT-32 simulation mode of the Roland SCC-1. And then of course to use the SB-16. Does ANYONE know what I'm talking about? I'd swear there was some sort of patch that allowed you to do this. Use both, but STILL use the Sound Blaster's OPL-2/3 for the non voice action sounds.
Thanks!

Ok, I just found this very patch I'm talking about, except for Ultima 7 and Ultima 7 part 2, is it possible that I'm mistaken? Was this fix only made for the Ultima 7 games?
Thanks!

I don't have any recollection of such a patch for Underworld. I could be wrong, but I rather suspect that you have hit upon the answer, and they were for the U7 titles only (which were made by utterly different development teams to the Underworld games, of course). To the best of my knowledge, these are the only Underworld patches available:

Is anyone aware of how to get sounds working properly with the Roland music? The music is wonderful with that setting, but then all sounds like footsteps and action sounds like weapon striking wall are just generic beeps.
I am running dosbox .65...any thoughts?

I've only ever tried Roland sound through emulation with DosBox so I've never heard what the original card sounds like. To the best of my knowledge, there is no patch available for the Underworld games - at least, not an official one anyway. The emulator works quite well, but I used to own a Sound Blaster which sounded better than the emulators provided by either DosBox or VDMSound.

There _was_ a patch for the Soundblaster AWE32 which took advantage of the fact that the Underworld games used the Miles sound library for their music and sound effects. Details can be found here: (

I just tried both games using DOSBOX, and although UW1 certainly has this problem - UW2 seemed ok with a soundblaster setting for the digital effects and MT32 / LAPC for the audio effects. A few piano noises were still creeping through.
