Noid is right, its the same old shit we've seen time and again, dont get me wrong they are some undisputable classic songs, but getting a bit tired. I dunno what fett is thinking there is definitely more 'guitar refrains' in songs these days than of the last couple of years. I even heard a guitar solo on new Strokes album. I love hearing good solos, on any instrument, but it has to suit the song or be a damn good melody on its own. Brian May of Queen is the prime example, Queens stuff is chock full of guitar solos, but they always FIT, and are highly melodic, rather than just someone wailing through standard blues lick A, B and F.
As a guitarist, I love to hear someone talented just wailing and shredding away, but there is a time and place for that.

Queen
When I think "air guitar", I think of Bohemian Rhapsody (the slow part right before the fast part).

Piglick beat me to it... I was gonna say I dare anybody to not air guitar during "Tie Your Mother Down". Brian May is a GOD. :thumb:

I'm not talking about giving 4 seconds for the song riff to play through for another chorus at the end. I'm talking about the entire song building up to a good 30-40 second guitar solo as a contributing part of the whole song. Show me any song that's had radio airplay in the last 10 years with a guitar solo like that and I'll show you a market that isn't Clear Channel's bitch.

Everyone has their own Interpretation of what is a "Rock guitar" solo classic.
Maybe these lists are boring, but it is what people always seem to pick. They often come out similar each time.
"Guns N Roses" November Rain. Another classic..
Going of the Genre slightly. I personally love "Blues guitar" more though.

I forgot Elliott Smith's 'Cupid's Trick'.
Great rambunctious solo for an otherwise quiet song.

Anything by The Darkness.
Since 10 years takes us back to early 1996, I'm fairly confident you'd find the odd geeeetar solo amongst Britpop somewhere. Suede, or something.
Any of those new guys who desperately want to have been around in the 80s but aren't anywhere near interesting enough; they perhaps do solos. They might be synth solos though.
Also, the best solo at this moment according to me is in "Heartland" by The Sound. It does not outstay its welcome. It fits nicely. It's pleasingly ferocious.
