The other obvious question here is WHERE THE FUCK (outside of Dream Theater and such hesher-type thrash-a-thon bands) have guitar solos gone? Have you heard one on the radio recently?
There was a little 2 bar solo in a song called 'Going Under' by Evanescence on the radio a few years back and it was like staging a fucking coup to get it in there because the the record company (Wind Up) thought it would be 'too 80's'. I guess some of the nu-metal stuff has guitar solos (???) but the music is so bad that it's not worth listening to in the first place.
Notice that most songs on the list are from the 70's? We need more real rock-n-roll with balls out, long-haired, hammered on, played with my fucking teeth guitar solos.

In our times, it's metal for Great Guitar Solo Justice.

I think the only place you'd hear them on the radio in Britain now, in modern music, is in indie stuff like Coldplay, Franz Ferd, Oasis (how they are still around I just don't know) and so on. But I don't hear them. Perhaps it's the radio/mtv edits though as I don't buy this type of stuff.
I'd like to nominate the solo in Mayonaise by The Smashing Pumpkins as an underappreciated example.

(Coldplay/Franz Ferdinand wouldn't touch a solo with a barge pole!)
Geek USA, which precedes Mayonaise on Siamese Dream I think Sub Ef(?), has killer solos too!
Ironically, I've always loved Smells like Teen Spirit's guitar solo. And Weezer did awesome solos back when people liked them! The solo on Tired of Sex was immense.
And obviously Stephen Malkmus.
edit - I guess the Nirvana one is just the tune of the verse played rather than sung. That probably doesn't constitute a solo. Mes apologies! Still sounds awesome, mind. My nirvana + guitar solos = irony equation is fucked though.

While we're on the Pumpkins, Soma's solo is simply one of the most beautiful and perfect there is.

My favourites are Larry Carlton's in Kid Charlamagne (Steely Dan), and Frank Zappa's in Inca Roads.
