I would imagine one day, some adventurer would enter the Cradle ... searching for loot or whatever. No Lauryl to warn them off. They get stuck in the Cradle... it has a new plaything.
I have thought of that also. You know, some people just wanna impress others by doing daring or... stupid things. Surely if they go into the Cradle, they'll go mad before realizing that they're trapped forever.
I think whether Lauryl will warn them off isn't that important, because she was inside the building, not haunting outside the bared entrance to tell people to turn back. The point is that there will be no friendly ghost to tell you how to leave (to trick the Cradle).
I can remember very well that once I left the Cradle, I followed Lauryl for a while and I looked back at the building, before continuing my way. The Cradle experience will be in my memory, forever.

Seeing as you're here, null, let me ask you something:
I was mulling over what might have been done to improve on the Cradle's already impressive design, when it occurred to me that you yourself might have an idea or two. Of course, the original concept implied more to the level, but has anything developed in your mind since then? You know, the sort of "Why didn't I think of that?" thoughts that plague every creator long after their work is done.
P.S. While I have your attention, are you staying the course on The Grave? You know we're just dying to know.

Also @Null: I was really intrigued by the two details you mentioned in that article that you discovered when researching actual asylums. Were there any others that were similarly chilling?
Here's the ending I end up with:
Eventually, adventurers are trapped by the cradle, and the population of puppets grows. Even as he rots, the last adventurer starts a fire to bring an end to the thing that has taken him. He sits to watch the building burn at the base of the staff tower, as the cradle's memory becomes confused its past is played before him, until it reaches the original fire, and the building and its "spirit" crumble.

That used to be an alternate entrance. It was cut for a very silly reason, but in theory, if you could get up there (the walls are not currently marked climbable), you could enter by dropping down the chimney, santa-style.

Ooh im intrigued. Where does it lead from. Were you originally able to get on the roof?
What was the silly reason? If you don't mind / can tell me?

Wandering back to the Thief thread after a while, and realise the feature I (and Null) wrote which was very much partially inspired by this thread isn't linked inside it. For posterity, I think it probably should be.

in 'pcgameplay' (a dutch gamemag) they also mention the cradle lvl but not that big like pcgamer
they tolled that the lvl design is great, the music is beautifull, that u must have a couple of extra pants with u...stuff that most peeps have already mentioned before
edit : in the last magazine they had a preview of F.E.A.R. and they mentioned the cradle mission again because it was so scary

Wee, that's the one with the seeping bodies and posessed inmates. "Cheery stuff," indeed.

Aaaaargh! I had to reformat my laptop when I was halfway through the very last level. Now if I want to see the ending I'll have to play this dang level again. Anyone got any post-Cradle savegames I could download? :erm:
