I quit playing early last night so I wouldn't have to play it at night. It's now very bright outside, and I just got started with it. Way too freaky---we're all horror fans here too, and this is even scaring my hubby. That's a hard thing to do.

I ended up playing that mission at about 4 in the morning, in the darkest room of my house of course. I was just about to go in the attic when my dog bumped into me, sending me flying out of my chair! :joke:

i thought i remembered someone commenting that they had liked the screenshot on thief3.com of garrett standing on a rooftop... and faceless commenting something like "you should... that's a sledge level" (which would mean he did old quarter as well).
this cradle level was really something - it freaked me out more than anything right from the start - without any npcs! (although those were all quite lovely too :)) i personally really like it... i think overall, it was my favorite.
@beckett
i forget which room # it was,
but garrett comments on someone doing some amateur brick work or some such thing in it - you remove the cinder blocks of the back wall & it's in there
(oh, and by the way - thank null for this lovely level :))

Spoiler tag here, since this could be a giveaway for some.
Shalebridge Cradle is at its best when you DON'T kill the "residents". The Cradle leaves you precious little room to run if you're caught- and the "residents" can be unpredictable in their movements. Not to mention they just flat-out give me the willies when they stop and crouch down, twitching like mad.
I put down two of them because they were just creeping me out. And it took 15 arrows to do it. You should have seen my jaw drop when I tossed a gas grenade at them- and they just kept walking.
(I'd have loved it if water arrows shorted them out, but hey- that's just me.)
And the flickering-lights effect they have- priceless. Absolute genius.
I loved the part when:
Garrett said "Well, this must be her blood...it's still warm" That was definetely an "ewwww....." moment...
Did I mention? This was the first time I was ever actually scared playing a videogame. I'm an avid horror fan: I grew up watching stuff like Hellraiser, A Nightmare on Elm St and such. I've probably played every horror game worth a snot, including the Silent Hills, System Shock 2, Undying, AvP2, The Suffering... and so on. I eat Stephen King for breakfast and crap out Clive Barker in the afternoon. And this is the first time I've ever actually been scared playing a game. I'm about as jaded as they come and still, I actually jumped several times while playing this mission.
You just made my day, friend.
Glad you enjoyed it.

My mission complete time for RTC (hey, that has the same abbreviation as "Return to the Cathedral". Coincidence? I think not!) was over twice as long as any other mission in the game. Probably because I spent the whole time creeping through it (even the first half of the map).
Is there any possibility you could make a standalone map like this in your free time? ;) Please?
Dookie on 31/5/2004 at 06:45
What's this RTC that I've been hearing so much about? And who is Null? Whoever made this level should be commended. Anybody know what other projects he/she has worked?

I was trying to imagine not just a level like Cathedral, but an ENTIRE GAME having this much intensity and pure genius of design!!!
Now THAT would be something.
Anyone know if such a game exists? Or one that comes close? I've heard alot of talk on this forum re: SystemShock 2 and Silent Hill, but know very little if anything about them. I'm wondering how they stack up vs. the Cradle level.
