From the fact that the Cradle was abandoned years ago, I knew that anything inside the Cradle would not be a normal human. What I didn't expect is that those things didn't vanish into vapour when I flash-bombed them, and would wake up if I got too near them. I assumed that if they didn't vanish, they might be dead like the Hammer Haunts, but I was wrong. Once I got a little bit too near to a "dead" one and suddenly it screamed. I almost screamed out loud along with it.

I replayed the cradle level last night. AND in one go!
It still felt scary even though ive done it before. I really like how the null and his guys kept the dread and depression of cradle even in the past such as the green tint.
I really liked how Laural spoke, it was creepy and when her voice begins you suddenly feel the neeed to find the nearest shadows.
Really i feel that this is one the first horror themed levels that i enjoyed
Exellent job

And this - 'there is still NOTHING scarier than a Silent Hill game. Ever.' - this, this makes me weep. A console game, with all its inherent restrictions, being held as more scary then the Cradle on the PC? Wrong.
You know that's not an argument :) And if you don't know there are PC versions of Sh2/3/4.
Ultra-realistic graphics (in comparison with fantasy look and feel of almost every thing in TDS), mature story, and attention to details amongst other things make SH king of psychological and atmospheric horror games on any platform. Konami know very well how to do interactive films.
For me, Cradle is genial not because it's scariest in the world (it's not) but because Null managed to make such scary and atmospheric mission with tools he had with Flesh engine and all its restrictions.

-amazing level! beyond what's already been mentioned here, it reminded me of The Legend of Hell House (the opening moment particularly, with the building towering over you; and Garrett describing it as 'a house with bad dreams') and The Changeling (for the thumping as you ascend to the attic). heart-stopping stuff! great work!

The Cradle was awesome scary...
...until that little girl came in :erg:
The last thing I want when I feel trapped and alone in a haunted house (in-game at least) is a reassuring and friendly presence - it shatters the atmosphere entirely.
It was like Brother Murus all over again, except worse, because Lauryl had an even more irritating voice. Lauryl is without a shadow of a doubt the Jar Jar Binks of Thief: Deadly Shadows.
It's a shame, because I can imagine how good The Cradle would have been without Alice in Wonderland.

You found Lauryl a friendly presence??
I found her to be a rather creepy person who should bang-to-rights be dead. Or be in the Keeper Compound; one or the other. Every time you heard the whispery sound before she spoke I jumped... She most definitely did not reassure me.

Strangely, the knocking wasn't cribbed from The Changeling... although there was a feature in the Cradle that didn't ship, in which you ripped some shelves from the wall to unblock the door to the attic in that closet... which was indeed, inspired by the Changeling.
GET OUT OF MY HEAD ... ;)

Null, I seem to remember that you were thinking of completing another level that didn't ship with the game. Is that still a possability?
Or am I having another flashback?

"Cradle 2: The Grave" will be released next year :D There's no sense to rush the mission because obsessed fans want it now, later and better is what I always say. Halloween 2006 would be nice.

Yes, you're blinded by your own flashbombs ...

No rush! No rush! I just needed reassurance that it was really going to happen. :D
Oh, look! Spots! :wot:
