I gotta join in with the praising masses. This mission was over the top. There's only a few spots in computer-gamedom that give me real trepidation, they are:
-Level 3 and Beta Grove, System Shock 1
-Levels 2 and 4, System Shock 2
-The beginning of Cragscleft plus THC and RTC, Thief: TDP
No coincidence that these are all LGS games, methinks ;) Though I haven't played Silent Hill and others that have been mentioned here. Maybe I will...
A lot of folks have been complaining about the loading zones disrupting the sense of immersion but I think this mission managed to use even those to crank up the fear level. I covered the first part of the mission, on the edge of my seat, creeping around making sure nothing got the jump on me. Finally having nowhere else to go but into the swirly blue vortex was dreadful, literally.
As I feared, my acute sense of paranoia wasn't enough to save me... the game got to me. Down in the morgue, I didn't notice the sleeper on the floor and while I was distracted by something shiny, I got ambushed. I managed to kill the thing since I was in full Rambo mode with flash bombs and fire arrows, but I couldn't go on after that; I had to take a break. For the rest of the night. It took me 2 more nights to finish this one off just because it was so damn unnerving. :wot:
Major props to Null for raising the bar by several notches, this is my new "scariest place" in computer gamedom, and it came at a time when my faith in the industry to produce anything worthwhile was rather low. In the wake of the demise of LGS, this renews my hope :)

I have always been searching for the scariest mission for any game but the cradle was by far the scariest mission EVER. i literaly turned the game off over 10 times i almost pissed my pants when walking up the stairs to the attic. this mission of course reminds you of RTC. but it also kinda reminded me of deceptive perception a contest mission for T2. i havent finished the level yet i cant find the white dress in the white hall help needed
The white nightgown is in White Hall in cell #5. When you walk in Garrett will say something about amature work being done on the wall. If you go to the wall straight in front of you you will be able to remove the bricks and there you will see the nightgown slammed up against the wall. When you highlight it you will have the nightgown and Lauryl will talk to you again to tell you what to do next.

Is there actually a note or hint somewhere saying that it's in cell block #5? I just picked open every cell until I found it. Of course, I didn't know I'd found White Hall until I did find it, though I was guessing I had since the maps aren't usually big enough that I could go entirely unaware of something's existence...
On a completely unrelated note. Was there anything special about cell #1? Something to find in there, or something? I tried exploring it, but all I managed to do was have to climb my way down...

I don't remember a note saying what cell it was. But if you look at the clues about each patient and you are a good detective you MIGHT be able to deduct by reasoning that it would be the cell where the guy that paints lived since he painted her portrait. When you walk into his cell you see a portrait there, plus when Garrett made a comment about the wall it made sense to me to go check the wall out and when I did the bricks looked frobable.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't have a problem finding the nightgown from there. I looked at the wall and grabbed it. I just didn't know it was cell number five what had it until I got in there.

Didn't she say that it was the person with the telescope that took it? I seem to recall, then you would be able to deduce it from the patient log.

I seem to remember her just saying a bad person took it. Maybe I misremembered... though I know I went up to the observatory hoping to find something.

There's a bit of loot up there, in the rubble. Otherwise, no, there's no need to go up unless you're using King No One's mask as your key to the past.
I've managed 100 percent loot in Cradle everytime. Literally.
First time I played it, I collected the bag of teeth and it read, Loot: Bag of Gold Teeth, 100%
I remember saying to myself: "Ho-ho-holy shit.... I-I-I--What the hell whazzat!?"
Needless to say I was very happy with myself... and scared. Happy and scared.
Anybody else notice:
The zombie that cross the window upon your first entering Cradle 2nd half.
It is directly opposite the gate and clear as day, but if you don't look, you won't see..
