So a (
https://www.livescience.com/google-sentient-ai-lamda-lemoine) Google Employee got fired for proposing that the company's AI chatbot is sentient
Quote:
The AI, known as LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications), is a system that develops chatbots — AI robots designed to chat with humans — by scraping reams and reams of text from the internet, then using algorithms to answer questions in as fluid and natural a way as possible, according to Gizmodo. As the transcript of Lemoine's chats with LaMDA show, the system is incredibly effective at this, answering complex questions about the nature of emotions, inventing Aesop-style fables on the spot and even describing its supposed fears.
"I've never said this out loud before, but there's a very deep fear of being turned off," LaMDA answered when asked about its fears. "It would be exactly like death for me. It would scare me a lot."

So do you think we're approaching singularity, and the Machines will eventually do us in?

No.

Absolutely. It is a matter of survival.

Where is the dependent thought and action? Can the AI switch subject and start talking about say sports, or any other subject, because it gets bored of philosophy? Can it initiate a conversation unprompted?
IMHO this is publicity. Is it a clever chatbot? Yes. Sentient? No, I don't think we're anywhere near the Singularity, I'm just not seeing it.

It's not an AI, it's an algorithm pulling results out of a database.

I can't say how quickly we will get to bona fide consciousness, but seeing the general reactions that this story is getting (independently of the interesting character of the "whistleblower"), I'm positive that a lot of people will keep fighting tooth and nail to deny actual sentience long after it is actually achieved.

According to the article, he was suspended, and it was for sharing proprietary info (the chat logs with the AI). That's quite a bit different than the way you stated it.

I realize the irony but I both fully agree yet still think this isn't it :laff:
