Lilian Gertrude Asplund was the last surviving American of the Titanic tragedy. She was 99 years old when she died last Saturday. She and her family boarded the Titanic as 3rd class passengers in Newfoundland, England after a trip to their ancestral homeland, Sweden. She lost three brothers and her father. Her mother and a fourth brother survived.
Ms. Asplund rarely spoke about the sinking of the Titanic and shunned the publicity.
As an adult, Ms. Asplund worked various secretarial jobs in her hometown of Shrewsbury, Massachusets. She retired early to take care of her mother who is reported to have never gotten over the loss of family on the Titanic. Ms. Asplund never married.
