R.I.P Joe Dever. A name unknown to 99.9% of you, but he was the author of a series of gamebooks called "Lone Wolf" which began being published when I was in primary school (in the 80s) and continued to release new books in the series right up to this year (with the release of the 29th book Storms of Chai). Thank you for your excellent books.

Joe Dever's family have confirmed that the Grand Master has passed away after a brave and private ten-year battle with illness.I was lucky enough to acquire the 29th book which was published under a limited print run. Three books were remaining in the series awaiting publishing which I'll likely never see sadly.

I read quite a few of the Lone Wolf series in my youth, good gamebooks.

Sad news, indeed! Great to see other LW fans on the TTLG forum. I wrote (and am still working on) a computer-based reader for the LW books, with auto stats tracking, called Seventh Sense. You can check it out at Project Aon (the home for all things Lone wolf), (

(unfortunately, real life has been kicking my trash, and I can't find the time to update/release a version to deal with Project Aon's recent switch to https... So, if you try it out, you'll need to refer to the forums for instructions on how to manually download the actual book files - not difficult, but more work. And will eventually update the main program, as well as finish books 18, 19 and 20!)

There's probably quite a few of us here that grew up playing his books.
Coincidentally I came across an advert for a (
https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/joe-devers-lone-wolf-console-edition-ps4/) Lone Wolf video game on the recent PS4 sale a few days ago. I know there's been a few different ones in the past, including one or two NWN mods that were quite good, but I was surprised to see adapted for the PS4.

I was playing that for a bit. Quite combat heavy, but if your a fan of the gamebooks then you'll likely like it.
I got about half-way through it I think. Overall not bad at all. I played the NWN mods a decade or so ago also. Now those are excellent. Tells a story of the events prior to the first gamebook. Shame those were never finished off (or they weren't last I checked).
And after the responses so far, that percentage is now looking at 10% possibly :).
The html versions of the gamebooks over on Project Aon are easily one of my favorite things to play during work hours. Keeps the mind awake playing those.

I remember being disappointed that the NWN lone wolf mods died soon after I discovered them. Apart from the nostalgia rush they were also one if the best NWN mods around.
There's been quite a few threads on GG re game books over the years so had you posted there then you might have gone beyond the arbitrary 10%. I rarely look in this forum; that might be the same for other members as well.

I loved the Lone Wolf books when I was a kid, they were the only ones that could hold a candle to Fighting Fantasy. (EDIT: Way of the Tiger was pretty good too)
I also remember buying the ZX Spectrum game "Lone Wolf: the Mirror of Death" from a computer fair in London, which must have been the 1991 Computer Shopper Show.
Only recently did I discover that a guy my parents knew illustrated a couple of the UK Lone Wolf covers.
Great memories, great books. Adieu Joe Dever.

Ah nice. I've only played the one that's on Steam + the NWN mods so far.

I searched Steam for that one and it appears I have it in my library already. Arf!
Turns out it was in a bundle in September.
