Dolly Parton has clocked out just as Tim Curry went to space for the final time. Two remarkable people who managed to leave their mark on the time they lived in, both dead at 80 from health issues.
Tim Curry has of course done many more famous things, a slew of wonderfully quirky roles from Frank-N-Furter to Premier Cherdenko, but the thing I knew him from first was Gabriel Knight, a remarkable performance at a time where voice acting was not a priority in video games to say the least.
Dolly Parton apparently remained genuinely decent and down to earth despite becoming a huge megastar. Even if you didn't listen to her genre of music, I doubt there are many people of my age who have escaped any of her hits like 9 to 5 or Jolene.

I actually ever wondered if her boobs were natural, but since she was old school I would bet on they're natural.

I watched Dolly get her start on the Porter Wagoner show filmed in Nashville which isn't too far from where she grew up in Sevierville, Tennessee. Sevierville is called the gateway to the Smokies because the road through leads to Gatlinburg which is the start of the Great Smokey Mountain park. It's beautiful country full of old cabins like the one she was born in. I've taken my family to Dollywood at Pigeon Forge which is an amusement park between the two. Nearly singed my eyebrows off on the mine ride. But anyway, she was a good person, she has donated millions of books to children worldwide. She never hoarded her money but put it to use helping those in need. I always wanted to meet her.
And Tim I first knew from Rocky Horror. I used to go see it at the Hoka theatre in Oxford. Great music and a rollicking good time. He was deliciously wicked and what teen doesn't glorify sex? I bought the eight track tape and blasted the songs in my Buick cruising around the square. He made a wicked Pennywise as well. He was good in everything I saw him in. Before Covid we had plans to tour England and go by the castle used in Rocky Horror. Maybe stay the night.
It's a shit day for my memories and humanity.

Two sad losses for humanity.
Dolly did wonderful work, uplifting other people, sharing her blessings and turning adversity into opportunity. Tens of millions of children continue to get a leg up on literacy, thanks to her.
Tim was a natural who inhabited his characters. He was the embodiment of "there's no such thing as a small part".

One story about Dolly I'll always remember is how she took a bath in a one room cabin with all her brothers there getting ready for church too. When she complained her mother told her to get in the tub and wash up as far as possible then wash down as far as possible then when the boys left to wash possible.

Both legends in their own fields. I never really like Dolly's music but her work for kids was amazing. Tim was brilliant in everything and I've admired his performances for decades.
Also of note - Peter Cullen, the voice of Optimus Prime, died the day after. Transformers was such a part of my childhood and that voice coming back in the 2007 film was a highpoint.
