the First and No other are in the middle of Us,
of Note of the second are 2 steps behind Us,
to Portray the third is to be Us,
The fourth as we know has 9 places in front of Us,
finally the fifth of our zest Before Us.
...
(Answer assumes you don't count blank spaces)
For the first line it is t, which is exactly 4 letters ahead and behind capital letters F(irst) and N(o other).
The second letter in the second line is o 2 places behind N(ote).
The third letter is the P in Portray, as in to be Us.
The fourth is 9 places in front of T from The which is a.
The final letter is four steps behind the B(efore) in zest, which is z.
The answer is TOPAZ, you know what that is? :cheeky:
Constructive criticism ahoy! (what can I say, I'm in a game-design mood)
It's not bad, actually. There are really only a couple things that don't work here. First is what I already mentioned about pronoun agreement. Is the riddle being told from the point of view of the letters in
topaz, the object itself? It's unclear.
I thought the letter counting was obvious from the start, so that works in your favor. Unfortunately, wording threw things off a bit. Consider the way people read English, and how that might affect their interpretation of the words. It's a left to right relationship, leading to this:
before----------after
front------------back
So, while the first and fifth clues work (though capitalizing "Us" may have been more confusing than helpful, as the U then seems just as important as the F or N), the second clue falls flat, because the o isn't behind the N, it's two spaces
in front of it. The same holds true for the fourth clue.
As for the third clue, the theme of the puzzle-solving-method is "Start at the capitalized letter then move away from it," so you shouldn't break that rule. Rule-breaking is a good way to avoid tedium, but this isn't long enough to need it.
Anyway, welcome to the forum. Thankfully, I'm not always this academic.
stupid graduate school making me critique everything...
Oh, and the sailboat/schooner thing is from the movie "Mallrats"

How about this one?
As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with seven wives,
each wife had seven sacks,
each sack had seven cats,
each cat had seven kits (kittens)
kits, cats, sacks, wives,
how many were going to St. Ives?
Sluggs on 6/4/2007 at 22:04
Just one! The others probably wern't going to St. Ives
Gingerbread Man on 6/4/2007 at 22:19
