Why was Hamster driving the JET CAR anyway? Was the Stig having a day off or what?
I mean, in the past it's always been the Stig who has been testing with the dangerous equipment. Granted, they have been trying to "kill" Hammond on many occasion in the show by drowning, freezing, electrocution etc. but going 300mph strapped in front of a jet engine is serious business!

I remember reading somewhere that the car may not have been designed to travel at the sort of speed that was being aimed for. If that's true then a mechanical failure would be of no surprise.
