You have a pretty good review of the original System Shock in the thread right under this one.

Seeing as how both games are in my top 5 of all time, System Shock 1 being number 1 of course, I can heartily recommend you play both ASAP.

i saw part of an episode for SS2 and i must say i bet it the graphics will look a whole lot better after the CCP is finished.
in the episode the graphics look to much like a cartoon.

I've seen the saying that System Shock 2 is Thief meets StarCraft. Actually there's more than that. It's got Half-Life-esque shooting action and Diablo-style skill tree and skill point management, which are the two main gameplay elements in this masterpiece.
The StarCraft comparison is due to the slick sci-fi interface (just interface, the actual game world looks kind of raw, not slick, and it's insanely immersive), the high-quality sound effects and unbelievably good voice acting.
Story-telling is done in a non-linear, and truly innovative way. Did I mention the great voice acting? Yeah, that's how the majority of the story will unfold. I'm not saying there are lots of scripted cutscenes (actually there're very few). The voice acting is only accompanied by plain text, which is fantastic for people who like to read text instead of watching movies. It's like a really good radio drama, in the sci-fi horror genre.
Yeah, it's true horror. If you've played Thief, Resident Evil, Silent Hill and the like and have been scared, you'll want to play this game only in a public place. (I played it in my school's library with hundreds of people around me.) And many people may not "get" it, that is, understand the philosophy that lies beneath the scares. The game has a few important messages, and if you don't get them, you'll just experience the fear and gain nothing in return. That's why it's such a cult favorite. Not many people understand this work of art, but when they do, they love it with every byte of their hollow, digital existence.

Great post. Needs less seeping pretentiousness at the end. 3/5

wow thanks. And the pretentious part contained the core summary of my SS2 experience
