I've read about reusing artists' works in general terms (Lifetime plus 70 years). However, I read some fine print at (
https://americanillustration.org/terms/) and froze my intentions.
My future FM will have a very light steampunk nature, artistic natures ranging between medieval and art nouveau. For a while, I wanted to use a couple of Maxwell Parrish's paintings, but the above link hindered me from doing so. I'm interested in using art that is quite old, but I'm tending to stay clear of artists like Parrish and Alphonso Mucha, or even N.C. Wyeth. I respect individual copyrights regardless of timeframe, but would like to use some works if permitted. I removed Parrish's works, but still have this one: (

On Google images I found a "public domain" photo labelled for reuse with modification. However, I don't know if someone just took a photo of a desk in a castle somewhere, and if the property owners have proprietary rights on the objects: (

Likewise, I have an underground sewer that will contain a sweel. The next link (CC BY-SA 2.0) has an old Roman painting that would be potentially apt: (

So where do we draw a line in terms of copyright and what should be reused? I'd like to add some originality to the art for my FM without recycling old works, but at the same time I'd like to respect copyrights where required.

I seriously doubt you'll get in any kind of legal trouble for using copyrighted images, unless you were making financial profit from them. Plenty of copyrighted music in more than a few FM's I've played, never heard of any issues

Well, my point was not to use media that is out of copyright but is still appropriated (hope that word is right) by family or institutions such as museums or art websites. I played a couple FMs where the copyright was likely intact, but I have different priorities for the one I'm making.
