If you fancy some other games which took their inspiration from XCOM, you can do a lot worse than Altar's (
http://www.1cpublishing.eu/game/ufo-trilogy) UFO trilogy. The combat is pseudo-turn-based and the strategic layer involves a lot more logistical and personnel management as the series progresses, which some didn't like, but it's a fresh take on the genre which I'm still replaying from time to time (including now).

Speaking of retro X-COM/XCOM. RPS (
https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/03/30/x-piratez-xcom-mod/) did an article on a total conversion mod for the original X-COM (done in the openXCom engine) which basically changes the game into a game of piracy (as in your a pirate, not a software pirater :p).

When this gets to version 1.0 I'm definitely going to have a play of that.
