If you want a taste of something much closer to the originals, but with less of the tedium of all of the micromanagement, try (
http://openxcom.org/downloads-milestones/) OpenXcom, an open source clone of X-COM. I'm a fan of the original X-COM and I couldn't play it without the conveniences of OpenXcom today. Soldier equipment loadouts being saved alone reduces much of the tedium, but OpenXcom adds so much more to your quality of life with small things like little scrollbars and sliders and shortcuts and mouse wheel support. Not to mention stuff like quicksaving/loading and improved pathfinding.
In any case, the way I see it, Terror from the Deep was to Enemy Unknown basically what Thief TMA was to Thief TDP -- the same mechanics with a fresh coat of paint on the setting. The third one, however, I remember a lot of people being very unsatisfied with, because it was so different. I quite liked it, though. It kind of felt more... cyberpunk, whereas the first ones had an almost cartoonish feel to them. Not that there's anything wrong with cartoonish aesthetics/themes.

The first two also had charming pixel art going for them, whereas the third one looks like Windows 3.1 threw up all over it.
Thanks for the link to OpenXCOM, I'll definitely give that a try next time the mood takes me.

On this topic, I would recommend Xenonauts. Very similar style.

I'm now in the middle of the assault on the EXALT base, but in terms of the main story I've only just interrogated my first alien, so I get the impression I'm somewhat behind in that regard. (Having looked at the XCOM Wiki, I think I've seen practically all of the enemy types.) I've lost three countries IIRC, but at the end of this month I'll have satellites up in every remaining country.
While I won't jump into XCOM 2 immediately after finishing this one, I'm definitely putting it on my wishlist, especially since most people say that it's XCOM but better, and I'm already digging this one a lot. If I didn't have such a huge backlog, I think I could definitely get into higher difficulty levels, Second Wave and Long War. (Who am I kidding: Long War would kick my ass to Nigeria, the first country I lost, and back.)

Long War is definitely worth your time and is free of charge, so do consider it. I never played on XCOM:EW on above the lowest difficulty as I just got pounded and have managed to nearly complete Long War, so don't dismiss it! It just requires a re-think on how you play - read the tips carefully.

If I replay XCOM, Long War is a definite option. It's more of a question of my ever-expanding backlog and other games I'd like to play.
Anyway, time for work to be over for today, so I can go home and heatshot every motherfucking last one of them in that damn EXULT base.

It really depends on how bad you're hurting for that sweet sweet turn-based action. I too have a ferocious backlog which I doubt two generations of my descendants will clear, but I got so hooked on XCOM Long War, that XCOM now occupies the number 3 spot in my Steam playtime at 292 hours, just (just) behind The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth and Skyrim.

Please don't. Otherwise we'll never get a new version of (
