Anyone else playing Resident Evil 7 right now? I've been looking forward to it since the Beginning Hour demo was released on PS4 last summer and have been playing for a couple hours now that its come out. I'm really digging it so far and its nice to see that Resident Evil has gone back to its survival horror roots. It sort of reminds me of how RE4 was a complete departure from the previous games in both gameplay and story and could very well be its own IP. I'm still only a few hours into the game so my opinion could end up changing but the first few hours that I've played so far seem to be hitting all the right notes. If anyone is on the fence then you can always try the demo which was added to PC and Xbox One last month.

How representative of the full game is the demo?

The demo is more like a vertical slice of gameplay showing the various mechanics in addition to the overall tone and atmosphere that they're going for with the game. I never got around to playing the extended demo (they updated it later to include additional content) but the demo does not include any of the combat and stealth that is utilized throughout the main game. I actually just finished the game a while ago and really found myself enjoying it. I'll be curious to see what others here think of it if and when they get around to playing the game. I don't want to spoil anything as I found the game to be more enjoyable going in blind.

The Eurogamer review says that the demo is much better than the full game, so I'll probably wait a little longer.

Does it have anything to do with zombies?

Like RE4 it's a yes and a no. There aren't any traditional zombies like the ones found in the original RE games though if that's what your asking. Like I said earlier, this could really be its own IP since it has very little do with the main resident evil series but I think that's a good thing especially after the previous entry in the series.

Not in the slightest. Zombies haven't been present in a Resident Evil game ever since Code Veronica. Sad days :(.

There were zombies in portions of RE6 (mostly in Leon's campaign) but that game was just so over the top with set pieces and quick time events that it ruined any sense of atmosphere for me.
But yeah, it seems in general that the Resident Evil games have gone away from the Romero type of zombie of the undead for a more broad and general notion of a living zombie where their mind is being controlled by another whether it be by parasite (RE4) or something else.

The only way to play Resi 6 is in co-op with someone else. A solo playthrough would be punctuated by moments where you'd headdesk so hard you'd have bits of cocobolo permanently implanted in your skull after.

The demo was too creepy for me to finish it so I don't know why I thought I could handle the game proper, but here we go. I'm not too familiar with the series, only played RE2 back in the day and RE4 until the annoying chirpy damsel in distress ruined the mood, but this seems far more of a horror game than what I've seen of the previous games. If I don't get a gun soon I'm not sure how far I can go :O
