The top link in the above post is the forum I was talking about. Its been super quiet for the past few months. Thats why much of the latest posts are people asking for updates. For a VERY long time that thread was quite lively.
If your a MEGA Resident Evil fan (or of RE 1.5) then I'd recommend going to page 1 of that thread and reading up from there. The team used to post weekly detailed posts on progress.

So is 1.5 actually worth playing or is it as bad as Mikami said? And if it is worth playing, is the current build worth a look or is it better to wait for updates?

Well in theory it should be as good as RE 2 once this is finished off, though that's completely conjecture. I've not played the coliseum demo, or the proper demo, or even the alpha leak. So I can't speak on the quality of it. I've only watched dev videos.
Why have I not downloaded it and had a play for myself - I'm savoring the experience of the full thing. I can't wait to play this, but when I do play it, I want to play it in full. Much like games I've backed on KS. Sure I could play an alpha, beta etc, but I'd rather just wait till it's done and THEN play it. I did the exact same with AM2R.
If you like playing demos though, then I'd recommend tracking down the demo and make up your own mind on it. I recall that QUITE A BIT of development for a long time was on bug fixing and missing feature adding. Like the inventory was completely missing in the build that had been obtained, and many maps did not have linking hallways between them. So teleportation was the only wait to see the rooms that had been done. Plus new rooms had to be added in. Enemy behavior needed to be fixed up as well.
I do know that the story goes off differently to how RE 2 ended up. Umbrella for example, in this one got in far more trouble over the events of RE 1.
Here's some gameplay (still has some bugs in there, in this one):

Tried to find one from the mods creator, but couldn't find anything recent-ish. Only dev videos of new features being implemented like the item box, zombie AI etc etc.

I played through Leon's campaign over the last 3 days, and thorougly loved it. Only ever played the PC demo of the original, but I was intrigued by it already then. As for the entire series I've only finished RE4 previously, as none of the others have really grabbed me. The early ones with their static cameras felt too wonky, and the post-RE4 ones have felt too actiony. This one was perhaps even better than RE4. I love how punishing it is, and how scarce resouces often are, there were often times I was running around without as much as a combatknife to defend myself with, just praying nothing too dangerous ambushed me before I could find some ammo. The only thing I didn't like about the game was the writing. Even though everything else about the game has been updated, the writing felt stuck in the 90's.
Notes:
-I missed out on a few secrets in the police station. Never found that heart-key.
-what are the blue herbs for exactly? I got the impression they're for healing poisoning, but, uh, I never got poisoned so I had a whole pile of them left by the end of the game.
-Mr. X is such a great baddie, and shows that when designing enemy monsters, the systems behind them are often more important than the way they look. He's just a generic big beefy zombie in a trenchcoat, but what makes him terrifying is the knowledge that he's always out there somewhere, and when I'd hear him stomping closer and closer it sent shivers down my spine.
Overall, wonderful game. Might do a second run as Claire and search for all the stuff I missed.

The Heart key only becomes available if you play on Claire's campaign, conversely she never gets the Club key. Poisoning only really becomes an issue when you play on harder settings, I think you can also combine blue herbs to create a temporary health buff that makes you resistant to damage.

Henke - based on all of that, be sure to play RE7. It's the same basic format as this, but first person and scarier.
I still need to do my fourth run of RE2 so I can post my review.

Been kinda holding out for RE7 getting VR support on PC, but it doesn't look like that's gonna happen.
And, hell, I'd probably be too scared to play it that way anyway. Yeah, I'll get it eventually.

Finished my 2nd playthrough with Claire. Too similar to Leon's for my liking, but there were still a few cool twists to keep me engaged. I love Claire's reload animation of the Army revolver. Especially when a zombie is shambling towards you while she's frantically reloading that thing. The submachine gun was also very useful in a few parts, especially in the fight in the streets against the dogs.

I finally did get poisoned this time by one of those sewer monsters. Also just started putting the blue herb in every health mix I made, coz why not.
Has anyone tried the Extra Modes? Worth playing?
